Title: REBAR

1
REBAR
  • How to be safe when handling or working around
    rebar

2
Presentation Arrangement
  • What is Rebar?
  • Safety Issues with and accidents caused by Rebar
  • OSHA regulations
  • Ways to avoid issues and accidents
  • Case Studies

3
Rebar is defined as
  • A portmanteau for reinforcing bar or
reinforcement bar, is common steel bar, an
essential component of reinforced concrete and
reinforced masonry structures. It is usually
formed from carbon steel, and is given ridges for
better frictional adhesion to the concrete.

4
Jobsite Safety Issues
  • Rebar is used on nearly every construction job
  • Top two types of accidents associated with rebar
    are impalements and abrasions
  • Working with rebar also opens the door to pinch
points, striking other works, causing aches and
pains due to heavy lifting, flimsy iron needs to
workers to handle, tripping and falling hazards,
    etc.

5
OSHA and REBAR
1926.701(b) Reinforcing steel. All protruding
reinforcing steel, onto and into which employees
could fall, shall be guarded to eliminate the
hazard of impalement
1926.703 (d) Reinforcing
steel for walls, piers, columns,
and similar vertical structures shall be
adequately supported to prevent overturning and
to prevent collapse.
6
Two Most Important Injuries
  • Impalements are when workers fall on a piece of
rebar with enough force to pierce that workers
    body

7
  • Abrasions usually happen when a worker rubs
against a piece of rebar and gets scratched
and/or cut from the sharp edges.
  • These can be avoided by implementing a few
    safety pieces

8
CAPS
To avoid impalement and abrasions each lower
level rebar protruding up must have a cap on it.
Protects against impalements
Protects against abrasions ONLY
9
Remnants of Rebar
  • When cutting rebar cutters make it easier and
    take less human force
  • Protective gloves and eye
  • wear should be used
  • Small ends can fly up when
  • being cut
  • Pick up all pieces
  • laying out
  • The hard to see pieces can act
  • as a tripping hazard
  • When someone steps on them
  • they act as a roller

10
Back Breaking Work
  • Tying and bending the rebar together caused back
injuries and other joint related pains along with
    pinching fingers
  • Extended arm bender and mechanical rebar tools
    help eliminate those injuries
  • The tools need to be accessible to workers

Gloves should always been worn to reduce the
possibility of being pinched between pieces and
getting gets and scrapes
11
Free Fallin
Proper tie-off equipment such as the lanyard
seen here should always been used when setting
rebar The rebar structures being climbed must be
able to support the weight of the workers and be
stable Tying off prevents the worker from
possibly being impaled on lower rebar even if
there were caps

Be Careful
  • Implement safe practices to avoid injuries
  • Rebar can be dangerous
  • Always wear PPE
