Function of Wexford Co. Co.
  • One of the functions of the Council is to provide
    potable drinking water.
  • The Council currently produces over 42 million
    litres of water a day.
  • The following map shows the major public water
    supply schemes in the county.

Water Conservation
  • County Wexford Water Conservation Project
    commenced in January 2003.
  • Purpose of the project, is to promote the more
    effective utilisation of existing water resources
    reducing the volume of potable water lost or
    wasted in the distribution system.

Why Water Conservation?
  • Saves Councils money (spent elsewhere)
  • Saves on water bills (customers)
  • Helps environment
  • Increasing population increasing demand
  • Smaller households increase demand
  • More water appliances dishwashers, power hoses,
    garden sprinklers.
  • (Possible) Climate change

How?
  • Check your plumbing for leaks
  • Install water saving devices in toilet cisterns
    can save 20 of the water you flush away
  • Eliminate automatic urinal flushing by installing
    sensor controlled ones
  • Dont let the tap run unnecessarily
  • Make staff aware of the importance of saving
    water and money
  • Read your meter regularly, at least once a month.

Demand Management Study
  • Under the demand management section of the
    project, Gorey Community School was chosen to
    introduce water conservation measures.

Identification of Water Usage
  • A data logger installed on supply meter to record
    the volume of water used. Used to assess the
    consumption profile for the school.
  • Survey of the school undertaken to find out the
    number and type of plumbing fixtures and fittings.

Water Conservation Measures
  • Gorey Community School (1,600 pupils)
  • Installed push-fit taps, urinal controls and
    cistern dams (and repaired two small leaks).
  • Reduced water usage from 24,000 to 15,000 litres
    per day (on school day).

Demand Management Summary
  • Monitor the meter supplying the building and
    assess the consumption.
  • Survey all water fittings in the building, this
    weill highlight where any repairs might be maade.
  • Install appropriate demand management devices
  • Finally monitor the water consumption on a
    continuous basis to ensure its remains consistent
