Revelation 1.1-3
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave
Him to show to His bond-servants, the things
which must soon take place and He sent and
communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant
John, 2 who testified to the word of God and to
the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that
he saw. 3 Blessed is he who reads and those who
hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the
things which are written in it for the time is
near.
10
Revelation 1.4-6
4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia
Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who
was and who is to come, and from the seven
Spirits who are before His throne, 5 and from
Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn
of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the
earth. To Him who loves us and released us from
our sins by His blood-- 6 and He has made us to
be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father-- to
Him be the glory and the dominion forever and
ever. Amen.
11
Revelation 1.7-8
7 BEHOLD, HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, and every
eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him and
all the tribes of the earth will mourn over
Him. So it is to be. Amen. (Yes, So be it.) 8
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord
God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the
Almighty."

Gordon Fees Guidelines for Interpreting
Revelation
  • Focus on Johns original intent
  • Further prophetic meanings are secondary, to be
applied after figuring out what John originally
    meant
  • Let the book set its own terms
  • How to interpret symbols
  • Draws on OT symbolism, sometimes transforming it.
  • Images are complex and varied. They may be
    specific or generalc.
  • Johns own interpretations must serve as our
    starting point.
  • Do not allegorically press all the details
  • Apocalypses are concerned with the big picture of
God in control, not with chronological details

I said, My lord, what will be the outcome of
these events 9 He said, Go your way, Daniel,
for these words are concealed and sealed up until
the end time.
30
Revelation 22.10
10 And he said to me, Do not seal up the words
of the prophecy of this book, for the time is
near.
31
Revelation 22.20
20 He who testifies to these things says, Yes, I
am coming quickly. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Other Passages
Rev 2.5 Remember the height from which you have
fallen! Repent and do the things you did at
first. If you do not repent, I will come to you
and remove your lampstand from its place. Rev
2.16 'Therefore repent or else I am coming to
you quickly, and I will make war against them
with the sword of My mouth. Rev 16.15 "Behold,
I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who
stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he
will not walk about naked and men will not see
his shame."
34
Revelation 22.14-15
Rev 31-6 "To the angel of the church in Sardis
write He who has the seven Spirits of God and
the seven stars, says this ' I know your deeds,
that you have a name that you are alive, but you
are dead. 2'Wake up, and strengthen the things
that remain, which were about to die for I have
not found your deeds completed in the sight of My
God. 3'So remember what you have received and
heard and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you
do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you
will not know at what hour I will come to you.
4'But you have a few people in Sardis who have
not soiled their garments and they will walk
with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5' He who
overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments
and I will not erase his name from the book of
life, and I will confess his name before My
Father and before His angels. 6' He who has an
ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches.'
