TON of references to the Honor Code - Syllabi, Exams, and Assignments
- Plaques in classrooms
- Special K jokes
- Several months ago, you agreed to abide by
- Honor Code when you signed your application
You may be wondering...
- What is the Honor Code?
- Why do we need an Honor Code?
- What is YOUR role in the Honor Code?
4What is the Honor Code?
- Student-initiated and student-run system of
trust - Introduced in 1988
- Evolved (and evolving) over time
- On the premise that honesty and integrity are
qualities essential to the practice and
profession of management, the Honor Code is a
living code that seeks to reflect the ethical
standards of our Kellogg community. - The Honor Code governs conduct pertaining to
- Academics
- Recruiting
- Extracurricular activities

71. Not to seek an unfair advantage over other
students
Academics ? cheating using prohibited materials
during exams, collaborating with others when
prohibited, exceeding exam time-limits Recruitin
g seeking insider interview information not
available to all applicants Extracurricular
activities breaking campaigning rules

9Example Case 1 Pencils Down
- You must stop writing immediately when the
proctor says your time is up. Carrying on is
considered as having an unfair advantage over
other students, which is not a trivial matter. - In Spring 2004 a student took five extra minutes
at the end of a final. The incident was reported
to the Honor Code committee. - Sanctions
- Received a 0 on the mid-term exam
- Wrote letter to Kellogg community apologizing for
behavior
10Example Case 2 Cheating
- In Spring 2006, during an in-class midterm, a
student saw the answer to one of the midterm
questions on the paper of another student who was
seated beside him/her and included the answer
without the proper work. - Sanctions
- Can only receive a C and below for the class
- Letter of apology to the professor and the
student body
112. To truthfully represent fact and self at all
times
Academics plagiarism Recruiting lying on
resume /or during interviews Extracurricular
activities lying about forgetting your ticket
to a formal when you never purchased one
123. To respect the rights and property of the
Kellogg Community
- Infractions of this tenet are primarily crimes,
which include - Theft
- Vandalism
- Discriminatory / Bigoted Behavior
- Physical / Verbal Intimidation
- Such actions violate the Honor Code, as well as
possibly constituting a criminal act.
134. To report all material violations
It is your obligation to report a suspected
violation. The Honor Code can only be maintained
if suspected infractions can be investigated and
suspected violators brought before a panel of
their peers.
- This is NOT
- Spying
- Informing
- Tattling
- Etc.
This IS being a responsible Kellogg citizen.
147 out of 10 Kellogg students are comfortable
reporting an honor code violation
Q5 Do you feel comfortable reporting an honor
code violation?
- Top three reasons (based on frequency)
- Do not feel the need to report minor violations
- Do not want to spend the time and energy to
report violations - Do not want to tell on their classmates and
damage their friendship and personal reputation
