TEXT 2 Thessalonians 21-3

• There are three distinct types of departure from
  the truth taught in Scripture. They are

I. Error

• Usually brought about by ignorance of Scripture
• Can be corrected by sound Bible teaching and
  study
• Apollos was an example of this (Acts 191-7)
• Notice that it was corrected by lay
  teaching the truth ( Acts 1824-28)

II. Heresy

• Usually brought about by deception of Satan and
  promulgated through false teaching it is a
  departure from sound doctrine and the
  foundational truths of the Gospel (1 Cor 15)
• Again, can be corrected by sound Bible teaching
  and study, though more difficult than the first
  because there may now be entrenched systems to
  promulgate the teaching.
• Cause and correction in 2 Tim 223-26

III. Apostasy

• Brought about by willful denial of the truth
  regarding Jesus Christ.
• The act of professing Christians
• A rejection of the Deity of Christ and His
  atoning work (2 Tim 35ff 43-4)
• Cannot be corrected because the individual is
  not a believer (Heb 116)
• Only solution is salvation, though some will not
  be saved (2 Thess 29)

• D. There are some apostate individuals and some
  apostate systemsthey are not necessarily the
  same, nor are they mutually exclusive. Apostate
  teachers are described in Jude 4,8,11-13,16
• Three aspects of apostasy described in Jude 11
• Denial of blood atonement (Cain)
• Denial of Gods grace (Balaam)
• Denial of the authority of Gods Word (Korah)
