  • To give you a flavour of the academic component
    to the teaching offered through the doctoral
    programme

The three strands
  • The Programme Specification defines these as
  • Clinical
  • Research
  • Personal and Professional Development (PPD)

Teaching takes place
  • In the Postgraduate teaching suite
  • For year 1, on Mondays and Friday mornings
  • For year 2, on Mondays
  • For year 3, on Fridays
  • There are also 4 Blocks of teaching between
    placements (October/April in Yrs 1 and 2)

Teaching sessions
  • Are generally in workshop style
  • There is often small group work
  • There are often case vignettes
  • Often for trying out theory-practice links
  • Sometimes there is feedback to the group
  • There might also be an opportunity for personal
    reflection

Assessment
  • There are two 5000 word essays in the first year
    often based on current clinically relevant
    debates
  • Plus one in each of years 2 and 3
  • Plus the research and clinical assessments of
    course
  • In Year 1, there are two PBL exercises

Problem Based Learning (PBL)
  • This involves the solution of a problem with
    clinical relevance
  • Trainees are allocated to a small group (6) and
    to two facilitators
  • This is an analogy to solving clinical problems
    in NHS work settings
  • They prepare for a presentation and write a
    reflective report for each of the two problems

Year 1
  • Clinical
  • Adult, child and neuropsychology
  • PPD
  • Workshops and groups, plus risk and legislation
    in the clinical teaching
  • Research
  • Single case methods and design
  • Advanced methods

Year 2
  • PPD and Research skills remain
  • Clinical theme focuses on difference and
    diversity
  • Includes clinical issues in relation to work with
    these populations and services
  • learning disability
  • older people
  • severe and enduring mental health issues
  • forensic

Year 3
  • A focus on Health Psychology
  • PPD
  • Advanced clinical skills (options)

Year 3 options
  • There is usually a choice of three
  • Usually CBT, Psychodynamic and Systemic
  • There are eight small group sessions and an
    introduction and review
  • Each is offered by a core staff member with one
    or more experienced and trained clinical staff
  • Essay 4 is linked to these options

Time will be running out. Nearly the end!
  • There is a subcommittee to review teaching and
    related issues with representation from trainees
    and clinicians
