Whales are mammals that live in the ocean. They
arent the only mammals in the ocean. There are
two types of whales, Baleen and toothed. Toothed
whales have teeth and Baleen dont. Some people
help whales and some dont. Some people hunt
whales and eat them! Some whales are
endangered,Like,Killer whales, Gray whales, Blue
whales, Humpback whales. Most whales live in ice
waters. Some whales are the biggest animal, like
the Blue whale. Some whales sing, like male
dolphins, and humpback whales. Killer whales are
the most dangerous whale. Some whales flip their
tales in the air, killer whales dont. Sometimes
whales are washed up on the beach and special
people have to help it survive. Whales need your
help because people dont care, and they do bad
stuff that affect the whales. More people need to
SAVE THE WHALES!

Humpback
whale Humpback whales flip their tails in the air
and make a big splash. Some humpback whales sleep
with their tails up. A humpback whale can reach
maximum lengths up to 50ft 15m and can weigh up
to 48 tons. A calf may be 4-5 meters long- thats
up to 16ft long at birth. Depending on its size
the humpback can have between 270-400 baleen
plates. The plates can be as long as 80 to 85 cm
31.5 to 33.5 in. and 15 cm 6 in wide. They
eat krill and small schooling fish. It is easy to
recognize humpback whales because of its
tremendously long flippers. The flippers can be
one 3rd to one 4rth the length of the whales
body. The flipper can be as long 5m 16.4ft.
They have a small dorsal fin about 2/3s of the
way back toward the tail.Humpbacks are found all
over the world! Like other baleen whales they
migrate to warmer waters in the winter and summer
in the polar regions. Male Humpbacks are known
for their singing. In Hawaii they can be heard
during breeding season.

Gray
Whale Gray whales are filter feeders.baleen
whales.Whalers used to call them Devilfish
because of their fierce defense of blubber up to
10 in.25 cm on its snout and the front of its
head.Theyre used as tactile sensors, like cats
whiskers.Gray whales grow to be at most 45-50 ft
13.18-15m long. They spend the summer in the
Bering,Chukchi,and Beaufort seas.Gray whales
migrate to warmer water during the winter
months. The eastern pacific stock of Gray whales
travels along the coast of the U.S and
Mexico.Pregnant whales travel to the lagoons to
give birth and to raise the calf.NOT all whales
travel to lagoons during the winter.Gray
whales Search for food at the bottom of the
ocean. They eat tiny Shrimp-like animals like
amphipods,and other bottom-dwelling animals.Gray
whales are baleen whales.
6
Gray whales only eat part of the year. They eat
when theyre in Polar seas.Females reach lengths
up to 45ft and weigh 70,000 lb.Males are slightly
smaller. At birth calves are approximately 15 ft
long.Adults eat about 660 lb of food a day or
340,000 lbs during their 4 month feeding period.
7
Killer
Whale
Females can reach up to 24 ft and weigh between
3,000 to 8,000 lb.Males can reach up to 27 ft and
can weigh up to 12,000 lb.Calves are about 8 ft
long and 300 to 400 lb.at birth.They live from
the North Pole to the South Pole from the Indian
ocean to the Atlantic, Killer whales are found in
all oceans of the world.Killer whales are one of
the top predators in the sea.As a group,Killer
whales are known to eat squid, seals, sea
lions,penguins,even other whales!Killer whales
that live of the coast of California would be
difficult to eat a penguin.Killer whales that
live in the Northern Pacific can hunt harbor
seals,California sea lions.A Killer whale uses
its sharp teeth to catch its prey. They are
toothed whales.Killer whales can live a maximum
of 35 yrs.A males fin is very tall cup to 6 ft
tall and triangular shaped.A females
8
Is shorter 3ft and curves back toward the
dorsal fin.
9
Bottlenose dolphin
Bottlenose dolphins can reach lengths up to 12ft
and weigh up To 600lb.Newborns are 42-48 in long
and weigh 25 to 40lb.They are found all over the
world in temperate and tropical oceans in other
words,no polar.They are found both near-and
of-shore.They eat squid, and other invertebrates.
Killer whales and large sharks hunt bottlenose
dolphins! Bottlenose dolphins can stay underwater
for about 10 min. They can live a average of 20
yrs and some may live as long as 40 yrs. One
trained dolphin went as deep as 1,795 ft.
