What is NEFE?
  • The National Endowment for Financial Education is
    a non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to
helping all Americans acquire the information and
gain skills necessary to take control of their
    personal finances.

4
What is Project NEFE?
  • Project NEFE is a statewide collaborative
initiative to bring the accredited High School
    Financial Planning Program along, with
comprehensive training, to schools across Texas
    free of charge
  • Goal - To establish the new NEFE High School
Financial Planning Program as the leading
    resource in Texas classrooms

5
What is the Project NEFE Network?
  • The Project NEFE Network is comprised of credit
    union professionals and Cooperative Extension
educators who will assist with the promotion and
delivery of the new NEFE High School Financial
Planning Program through internal and external
marketing, by training other individuals, and/or
    hands-on classroom instruction

6
Why is the HSFPP important for teens?
  • Financial security in adulthood is extremely
    important
  • The high bankruptcy rate among young people
  • High level of personal debt amongst young people
    after HS
  • Lack of experience handling money
  • They dont always learn about this at home

7
Why do we need the HSFPP?
  • American children, teens and young adults (ages
8-21) earned about 211 billion in 2003.  This
group is spending at a rate of approximately 172
    billion per year.
  • 45 of college students are in credit card debt,
the average credit card debt being more than
    3,000.
  • The number of 18 to 24-year-olds declaring
bankruptcy has increased 96 in 10 years.
  • In 2002, more young people filed for bankruptcy
    than graduated from college.
  • Of the 5,775 high school students who took the
Jumptart personal finance survey in 2006, 65.5
    received failing scores.
