- Can Gwinnett Countys Oldest Historic Site Be
Saved? And If So, For What?
2Field Investigations
- Since the summer of 2006, The Gwinnett
Archaeological Society (GARS) has been conducting
archaeological and historic investigations at the
Gwinnett County Frontier and 1812 War site known
as Fort Daniel. - Newly uncovered historic documents have revealed
that there were actually two forts at the Hog
Mountain site dating from the 1790s through at
least 1815. - Hundreds of recovered artifacts and several
intact buried features have demonstrated that
this is a significant archaeological site
3The Perils of Pauline The Hope for Salvation
- The Fort Daniel tract and adjoining tracts are
for sale for commercial development. - GARS and the Friends of Fort Daniel (FFD) have
been focusing for the last year on strategies to
save the site and its immediate environs from
development - and to work for the creation of a passive,
archaeological park The Fort Daniel Historical
Archaeological Research Park.

21Keeping Them Crossed
- Purchase of the 15 acres for the park would come
from 2009 SPLOST funds. The decision to acquire
or not acquire would come sometime this summer. - If purchased by the County the site would be
developed and managed by a non-governmental,
non-profit, tax-exempt entity. - The Friends of Fort Daniel have undertaken to
become The Fort Daniel Foundation, Inc., a
non-profit, tax-exempt entity. - As a 501(3)(c) entity, the Foundation will have
the legal standing necessary to work with the
County, and to apply for most kinds of grants.
