Title: ITBS Data Analysis

1
ITBS Data Analysis
  • Test Score Alphabet Soup
  • What is average?
  • What to look for when identifying students in
    greatest need.

2
Alphabet Soup
  • PR- Percentile Rank
  • NPR- National Percentile Rank
  • S- Stanine
  • NS- National Stanine
  • NCE- National Curve Equivalent
  • GE- Grade Equivalent
  • SS- Standard Score

3
PR and NPR
  • Percentile Rank (PR)
  • National Percentile Rank (NPR)
  • Both refer to the same thing
  • Percentiles are on a scale of 1-99.

4
  • A percentile score of 50 means that 50 percent
of students in the nation did better than the
    student.
  • A percentile score of 10 means that 90 percent
of students in the nation did better than the
    student.

S and NS
  • Stanine , National Stanine
  • Scale based on 1-9
  • Divides the Bell Curve into 9 unequal sections

NCE Normal Curve Equivalent
  • On a scale of 1-99
  • Divides the Bell Curve into equal sections

GE Grade Equivalent
  • Reports score in terms of year and month of
    schooling.
  • GE does NOT indicate a students instructional
    level.
  • GE indicates the level at which the average
student would score on the same level test.

11
  • For example
  • A 3rd Grade student with a GE of 4.7 scored at
the same level as the average 4th grader in the
7th month of school would have scored on the 3rd
    Grade test.
  • GE is useful in showing the growth of a student
    over time.

12
SS Standard Score
  • This score is used as the foundation for
    calculating all other scores.

13
Norm-Referenced Test - NRT
  • Score compared to other scores

HIGH
LOW
14
Criterion-Referenced Test - CRT
  • Score compared to a performance standard

Criterion
15
What is Average?
16
Percentile Rank
  • 1-24 Below Average
  • 25-75 Average
  • 76-99 Above Average

17
Stanine
  • 1-2-3 Below Average
  • 4-5-6 Average
  • 7-8-9 Above Average

18
Grade Equivalent
  • Low student 7 month gain in 1 year
  • Fall Grade 6 4.1 GE
  • Fall Grade 7 4.8 GE
  • Average student 10 month gain in 1 year
  • Fall Grade 6 6.2 GE
  • Fall Grade 7 7.2 GE
  • High Student 12 month gain in 1 year
  • Fall Grade 6 8.4 GE

  • 5th 214
  • 6th 227
  • 7th 239
  • 8th 250
  • 9th - 260

20
Normal Curve Equivalent
  • Growth is the same no matter where on the Bell
    Curve
  • 3 NCE reflects significant growth

21
Understanding CogAT(Cognitive Abilities Test)
  • Verbal Battery
  • Predicts Academic Success
  • Quantitative Battery
  • Appraises Abstract Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Battery
  • Assesses Ability to Process Information

22
  • CogAT is NOT an IQ test
  • CogAT
  • Tests of Relational Thinking
  • Measures the Pattern Development of Learning
Strategies (How students learn to learn)
  • Measures Ability to Make Comparisons and Draw
Conclusions About Three Levels of Cognitive
    Symbols

23
More Alphabet Soup
  • SAS Standard Age Score
  • PGE Predicted Grade Equivalent
  • DIFF Difference between predicted and actual
    score

24
What to look for
  • ITBS stanine any student scoring 1-4
  • Compare Core Total stanine with sub-tests
  • Are there any subtests or 2 from Core Total?

25
  • CogAT Profiles
  • A Same (Verbal, Quant., Non-verbal)
  • B Above/Below (One score compared to other two)
  • C Contrast (one high / one low)
  • E Extreme (24 point difference)
  • Individual student profiles can be found at
  • www.cogat.com

26
CogAT Predicted Scores
  • Compares ITBS performance with CoGAT

27
Item Analysis Report
  • Can be used to identify concepts needing more
    instruction
  • Teach concepts, not test questions
  • Error analysis may identify common misconceptions

28
ITBS Other Notes
  • 1/3 of the questions on ITBS are recall
  • 2/3 of the questions are higher-level thinking
    skills
  • The majority of students should finish the test
  • Questions are saw-toothed (Easy, hard, easy,
    hard)
