Why measuring spins?
Magnetic resonance techniques have revolutionized
chemistry (NMR, ESR) but also medical diagnostics
(MRI)
Why is sensitivity of MR insufficient?
Magnetic resonance fails for small systems due to
its volume sensitivity. It can not be applied to
nanoscopic systems containing small spin
ensembles (single molecules, quantum dots, single
electron transitors etc.).
What to do?
Investigate spin to charge or spin to photon
conversion mechanisms.
