Definition of a Stabilized Standard
  • An approved standard that is not a health or
    safety standard
  • Standards that address mature technologies or
    practices
  • Standards that are required for use in connection
with existing implementations or for reference
    purposes
  • Standards that contain no identified significant
    erroneous information
  • Standards that are not likely to require revision

5
How is a Stabilized Standard Replaced/Retired
  • Replaced by an SASB approved Revision,
    Corrigenda, Amendment
  • Is no longer eligible or fails the balloting
    considerations.
  • Fails or is not recommended to a Stabilization
    ballot.

6
When is a Standard Eligible for Stabilization?
  • At least 10 years after last SASB action other
    than Reaffirmation.
  • The standard must have been reaffirmed at least
    once.
  • There are no current activities related to this
    standard.

7
Who Ballots the Stabilization of a Standard
  • A Sponsor created Balloting body that is also
open to the participation by materially affected
    individuals.

8
Considerations for Stabilization
  • Is equipment, code, or practice embodied in this
standard still in use by any entity serving the
    public?
  • Does this standard provide needed information for
the maintenance of that equipment, code or
    practice, implementing this standard?
  • Will this standard continue to be referenced by
other standards or by government authority or
    regulation?
  • Does the retention of the standard as a
Stabilized Standard serve the good of the public,
or industry and is it still useful?
  • Does this standard meet the requirements of
Clause 1.2 of the SASB OpsMan?

9
Next Steps to Stabilized Standards
  • Obtain approval from SASB and BOG as appropriate.
  • Target full implementation by December 2007
  • Prepare Initial Stabilized candidates from
    Sponsors
  • Push the Initial Candidates through process to
  • IEEE Stabilized Standard/ANSI Stabilized ANS
