Boat Capsizing

  • The 41 UTB is not a surf boat and will not
    recover from a roll over.
  • All exits are upside down after capsizing
  • Egress Routes

Exit Procedure
  • There will be an air pocket under the coxswain
    flat.
  • Remove PFDs to exit the boat.
  • Tie a line to PFDs to pull them out after exit.
  • Best swimmer exits first, carrying a line for the
    others to follow.

Procedure (II)
  • First swimmer should tap on the hull to signal
    the next swimmer.
  • The poorest swimmer should exit second.
  • Followed by the good swimmers.
  • Stay with the crew and the boat.

Alongside a Capsized Boat
  • Board the life raft if available.
  • Climb on top of the boat.
  • If the boat sinks or is a danger, hold the
    largest floating object.
  • Do not swim to shore.
  • Swimming and excessive movement may quicken
    hypothermia.

  • Do not panic.
  • There is a better chance of finding a boat than
    one single person.
  • Stay together.
  • Use HELP position to keep warm.
  • Keep all survival gear you can find.
