Observe these examples

• Audivi cur pater advenisset.
• I heard why my father had arrived.
• Clamores servorum audivit.
• He heard the slaves shouts.
• Audivit patrem ad urbem advenisse.
• He heard that his father had arrived at the city.

Option 1 Indirect Questions

• Audio, scio, video, intellego (to understand,
  realize), and sentio may be followed by an
  indirect question.
• Clues will be interrogative words (cur, quis,
  quid, ubi, quando, etc.) as well as subjunctive
  verbs.
• Once identified, simply translate as normal.
• Ex. Audivi quid diceres.
• I heard what you were saying.

Option 2 Direct Object

• When there is no interrogative word or
  subjunctive, look for an accusative.
• If there is an accusative followed by an
  infinitive, translate as option 3 .
• If there is no infinitive, assume you are dealing
  with a simple direct object, and translate
  accordingly.
• Ex. Audio servos in viis clamantes.
• I hear the slaves shouting in the streets.

Option 3 Indirect Statements

• If you have determined that the sentence contains
  both an accusative and an infinitive, the
  sentence also contains an indirect statement.
• Insert that in English and translate with the
  correct tense.
• Ex. Audio servos cenam paravisse.
• I hear that the slaves have prepared dinner.

• The boys heard the gladiators saluting the
  emperor.
• Eucleides non sensit ubi essent pueri.
• Eucleides did not realize where the boys were.
