About Jan Brett

• Born 12/1/49
• Currently lives in Norwell, MA
• Husband, Joe Hearn , Daughter, Lia
• Pets- Buffy, a hedgehog and Bluebell, a chicken
• Wanted to be a children's book illustrator at the
  age of 6
• Attended the Museum School of Fine Arts
• in Boston, MA
• Began her career in 1978
• Interests- Traveling, Reading, Music, Flying,
  Riding her horse, Hans, and studying birds

• First Written and illustrated book- Fritz and
  the Beautiful Horses, 1981
• It takes Jan 1 hour to illustrate 1 inch
• It takes her 4 months to 1 year to complete a
  book
• Uses a lot of detail in her drawings
• Trademark- Detailed borders and side panels
  created in oils and acrylics
• Jan and her husband choose a favorite
  illustration from each book she frames and
  displays them in her home

The Mitten

• Characters Nicki, the boy, Baba, the grandmother
• Nicki asked his grandmother to knit him a pair of
  snow white mittens
• Baba wants to knit him a pair in another color
  because, if dropped, they will get lost in the
  snow
• She agreed to knit a pair if he promised not to
  lose them in the snow
• But, of course Nicki did lose one mitten while
  playing in the snow

• A mole found the mitten and crawled in to get
  warm
• Then other animals followed A snowshoe rabbit, a
  hedgehog, an owl, a badger, a fox, a bear, and
  finally a meadow mouse
• The mouse climbed on the bears nose and made him
  sneeze
• The bear blew all the animals out of the mitten
  with his sneeze
• Nicki found his mitten floating in the air
• Nicki went home and showed his grandmother that
  he had both mittens, but one was stretched out of
  shape
