to eventually make peace with China

• Nationalist in Southern and Eastern China (Chiang
  Kai-Shek)
• Civil War broke out between groups
• U.S. supported Nationalists
• But Communists soon ruled all China

• Americans were surprised China Communist
• Communist resistance in Asia as important as
  Europe?
• Fear of Communism increased in Korea

• Japan rules Korea 1910-1945
• Japanese in NK surrendered to soviets
• South of 38th parallel surrender to U.S.
• Soviet Union helps NK invade SK
• Truman ordered Japanese troops to help SK
• General Douglas McArthur was in command

• North Korean troops cross 38th parallel (June 25,
  1950)
• MacArthur attacks back, saving South
• China felt need to back North
• Korean War China vs. U.S.
• War becomes a standstill

• MCA wants to move into China
• Truman denies his request
• Truman fires MacArthur
• Americans were upset
• War was a stalemate

• China and U.S. disagree for years
• Nixon travels to China for peace

• Agreed neither would dominate Pacific
• Agreed to work together to settle disputes

• We ignore China for years
