About His Work

• Jim Denevan is a performing artist who draws
  massive sand pictures on the beaches in Northern
  California.
• The pictures he makes are usually spirals and
  other simple shapes and their scale and location
  are selective and proportions are very precise.
• The drawings last a few hours before they are
  erased by ocean, and one has to view the drawings
  from 150 feet up or more to see them

His Methods

• He only uses a stick and a rake to make his
  creations.

The Process

• Denevan considers process a very important part
  of his artwork and chooses his locations
  carefully. Denevan walks for miles, leading his
  chosen drawing stick in a dance performed to the
  music of the ocean and the spirit of the place.
