5The Five Priorities for Implementing the ASDI
Governance
6Geospatial Data 1.01
- A 60 second overview in Geospatial Data
- A look at the data described by Geospatial
metadata
7Vector Data Point Feature
8Vector Data Line Feature
9Vector Data Polygon Feature
10Raster Data Satellite Imagery
11Raster Vector Data
12Attribute Data
13Geospatial Data 1.01
- Spatial Data is great for drawing maps
- BUT
- The true power of Spatial Data lies in
- Our ability to visualise patterns and see
relationships that would otherwise be hidden in
raw data (tabular data Vs spatial data) - And through GIS perform more advanced geographic
analysis
14The current national metadata standard
15(No Transcript)
16Discovering Geospatial Metadata
- ASDD Australian Spatial Data Directory
- Online directory to enable spatial data discovery
- Hosted by Geoscience Australia
- 25 Nodes 39,000 Records
- Most cases Metadata Only Limited data
- Vision would be a dynamic link between Metadata
and data
17(No Transcript)
18Metadata a retrospective
- Pages concept - accepted theoretically but not
implemented uniformly (except for Page 0
metadata) - MS ACCESS Metadata Entry Tool (MET) - success to
a point, but its maintenance became untenable - Agency and in some cases jurisdictional (eg. QLD)
web based entry tools exist - Poor alignment with Dublin Core metadata standard
19The new ISO Metadata Standard
- July 2003 ISO, the International Organization
for Standardization, announced the approval and
publication of ISO 19115, Geographic information
- Metadata. - Introduced concept of profiles, customisation of
standard to fit a particular community of
practice. - 420 Elements (Mandatory, Optional Conditional)
20Implementing the new ISO Metadata Standard
- July 2003 ISO Technical Committee 211 approved a
project to develop ISO 19139, Geographic
information - Metadata - Implementation
specification - Due for release July 2005
21Metadata Dark Ages (2002 04)
22The last 12 18 months
- NZ Geospatial metadata standard (19115-like)
- BRS metadata standard (99 compliant)
- Australian Govt profile (OSDM Metadata Working
Group Dec 2004) the catalyst - Jurisdictional efforts, especially WA
- ANZLIC Metadata Workshops (Perth Melbourne Feb
2005)
23ANZLIC Metadata Workshops
- Approx 100 attendees
- All jurisdictions vendors/ industry
- Game plan formulated
- Develop a ISO compliant national profile based
on the Aust Govt profile - Need a free MET
24ANZLIC Metadata Project
- Approved by ANZLIC Council on 8 March 05
- 3 Outputs
- WA (WALIS Office) to project manage
- ANZLIC National Office to coordinate
- Target date September 05 SSI Conference
25The Project Team
- Primary Project Team
- WALIS, ANZLIC, Vic DSE, OSDM, GA, LINZ, AODCJF
- Additional Support
- DEH, Office of Economic Statistical Research
QLD, BRS, NLWRA
26Project Outputs
- New ANZLIC Metadata Profile
- Alignment of existing profiles
- Aus Gov, NZ, WA and Aus Marine Community
- Agreed principle-based approach following ISO
obligations, using ISO def. with Aus examples - Development of UML diagrams, documentation and
agreed code lists - Development of XSD for MET
27Project Outputs
- MET Development
- Review of existing tools
- Technical Specifications from WA, GA, OSDM, LINZ,
AOCDF - XML based technologies
- Freely Available
28Project Outputs
- Education Outreach
- Project information Sheet
- Update email through ASDI-L
- SSI Conference Melbourne Sept 05
- Hardcopy / softcopy / online publication of
profile documentation - MET Softcopy / online
29New Profile Implications
- Metadata in ASDD is ANZLIC V2 compliant
- XSL to translate from ANZMETA 1.3 to new ANZLIC
Profile - Validation tools
- Requires strong in-house data information
management including conversion of V2 to new
profile
30ANZLIC Metadata Project
- Considerations for DC-ANZ
- Vision is for
- Seamless cross over between community of practice
with in Geospatial community - Translation capability between Dublin Core and
ANZLIC ISO Metadata Profile - OSDM - Requires a tool, an XLST to handle the XSL
31ANZLIC Metadata Project
- ISO 19115 is complex and based on hierarchical
relationships - Within records / Between records
- AGLS flat file structure
- No competition
- Complementary relationship, option for richness
- Commitment to link NDN (AGLS) to ASDD (ISO19115)
32Current Status
- Short ANZLIC ISO Metadata Profile
- Long Australia New Zealand AS/NZS 191152005
geospatial metadata profile version 1.0 - Profile harmonisation process finalised
- Technical Specification for MET complete
- MET going to tender
