2Ky GIS History
- 1980s . . .GIS Implementation began at NREPC
(ESRI User Number 31)
- In 1982, PRIME 750 elite machine in GIS
- 12 megabytes of memory, yes MB not GB!
- 600 megabytes of disk space
- 4mb upgrade to 16 mb cost 12,000
- Technician soldered jumpers on the system board
3Ky GIS History
- 1980s . . .Data Input ???
4Ky GIS History
Basically, everything was on the server . . .
5Ky GIS History
Many State Agencies began to embrace GIS
Technology Northern Kentucky, Lexington,
Louisville created High-end Implementations
(Urban Areas) Natural Resources - EPC puts a
couple dozen datasets out for download on the WWW
Kentucky Creates a Geographic Information
Advisory Council (GIAC now KyGB) to provide input
and oversight regarding GIS Implementation
6Ky GIS History
Image Data becomes Available for Free
Download Dozens of Vector Layers as well as
Raster Data also becomes available for
download! Natural Resources - EPC begins
implementation of KYs first Internet Mapping
Site (Custom Map Objects IMS Application)
7Ky GIS History
2002 . . .
KyGeoNet comes to life! (ESRIs ArcIMS
Metadata Service) Several Publishers load
nearly 100 datasets Kentuckys Geospatial Data
Clearinghouse becomes a reality! Metadata was
included Nearly 20 IMS Sites exist!
8Ky GIS History
2004
- DGI developed a Strategic Plan and got buy-in
from the leadership of COT - Hired two of the best GIS professionals in
Kentucky - Moved the KyGeoNet to DGIs office
- Began making GIS important to the State of
Kentucky, starting with State Government
9Ky GIS Today
2006 Today!
KyGeoNet has over 400 Published
Items! Resource is maintained by over a dozen
Responsible Publishers 23 Layers Published
to the National Map Full Integration with GOS
and Geography Network 40 IMS Sites exist and
growing!
10Ky GIS Today
2006 Today!
The KyGeoNet and its associated IMS sites
received over 7.5 million hits in August, 2006
from over 32,000 Unique Visitors.
11What is KyRaster?
- KyRaster is Kentuckys Geospatial Database for
Raster data and is contained in a dedicated
instance of ESRI SDE it - Was collectively built by GIS Staff from several
State Agencies - Resides in Mirrored Instances at Cold Harbor
Computing Center - Contains all the aerial images, topographic maps,
digital elevation models, hillshade, SPOT
satellite imagery, TruColor Imagery, LandCover
Imagery, Slope, and other critical raster GIS
base layers - Is leveraged by nearly every State Agency (that
does GIS) - Drives all of the IMS Applications served by
State Government - Is leveraged on the GIS Desktop by users in State
Agencies
12What is KyVector?
- KyVector is Kentuckys Geospatial Database for
Vector data which is also contained in a
dedicated instance of SDE it - Is the master repository of vector-based (lines,
polygons, and points) - Is based on all vector data that is available on
the Kentucky Geography Network - Mirrors the categories on the browse tab of the
KYGEONET - Contains full metadata records for each vector
dataset - Leveraged by ArcGIS Users on the WAN
- Leveraged by many IMS Sites
- Resides in Mirrored Instances at Cold Harbor
