1880 Railroad pioneer builds Hotel Del Monte
1879 Transcontinental railroad pioneer Charles
Crocker builds standard gauge rail line to
Monterey. Work begins on Hotel Del Monte. 1880 -
Del Monte opens in June. All rooms booked. 3,000
reservation requests turned down in first month.
Net profit of 4,000 in first two weeks over
11,000 in first six weeks. 1887 Hotel
destroyed by fire. Rebuilt by railroad pioneer
Charles Crocker.
