- The Research Report is usually a five
paragraph essay in which the writer must identify
a thesis and three main points (prongs) to
develop a cohesive report. It must also include
evidence documented by in-text citations and a
Works Cited page.

THESIS STATEMENT The THESIS STATEMENT is that
sentence that contains the focus and communicates
the main idea of your essay.

8The first paragraph serves as kind of a funnel
opening to the essay which draws and invites
readers into the discussion, which is then
focused by the thesis statement before the work
of the essay actually begins.

9MORE ABOUT THE THESIS
- The writer must give the reader a preview of
the main points (prongs) for discussion. REMEMBER
that prongs must be research-based. That means,
that they tell why you have formed the thesis
and how you plan to discuss it in the report.

- The prongs are always the topic sentences of
your body paragraphs. These points must be
supported by data from your RESOURCES!!!

12The first paragraph of the body should contain
the strongest argument, most significant example,
cleverest illustration, or an obvious beginning
point.

- a restatement of the thesis statement, using
some of the original language or language that
"echoes" the original language.
21REMEMBER
- The restatement, however, must not be a duplicate
thesis statement.
22DONT FORGET TO
- summarize the three prongs from the body.
23AND GIVE
- a final statement that signals to the reader
that the discussion has come to an end.
24- Heres your opportunity to give your evaluation.
Make sure that you state it without using 1st and
2nd person pronouns. - In other words, you cannot use we, me, my, I, us,
you, your, our, mine, and yours.
25DONT FORGET
- All of your paragraphs should be 5-8 sentences.
26- Details should be one of the following
- 1. Topic Sentence (Prong)
- 2. Detail Sentence
- 3. Example or Evidence
- 4. Analysis (How is 3 related?)
- 5. Explanation/Further Exploration (More
