Title: Careers Of The Future

1
Careers Of The Future
  • Steelworker Organized Workplaces

2
United Steelworkers History
  • The great depression of the 1930s hit working
families particularly hard. For many there was
no place to turn for help. Only through
collective action could they maintain their
    dignity as working people.

3
Steelworker History
  • In 1936, the Steelworkers Organizing Committee
(SWOC) in Canada was formed to respond to this
urgent crisis particularly in the steel industry.

4
Steelworker History
  • In September 1936, SWOC organized 3,000 members
at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie to form Local
    2251.
  • In 1949, the Steelworkers were successful in
negotiating a 44 hour work week and in the
following year they were among the first to
achieve a 40 hour work week at both the Stelco
    and Algoma steel mills.

5
  • Today the United Steelworkers represent more than
240,000 members across Canada and more than
    500,000 in the United States

6
Steelworker History
  • Steelworkers are proud of their history and their
victories won by people standing together through
    collective bargaining, political action.
  • Steelworkers are committed to fight one day
longer for decent wages, pensions, benefits and
    safe working conditions.

  • This will again add pressure to the Trades
