  • Command Indoctrination and Career Development
    Boards are two Force Shaping opportunities for
    commands and CPPD wants to make sure that every
    command has the resources they need to execute
    these programs.

Command Indoctrination
A good Command Indoctrination program sends a
strong, positive signal that we value the skills
our new shipmates bring to the waterfront, and we
have a plan to integrate them into the crew. This
means getting our sailors a head-start on PQS,
safety, family support, available services,
education opportunities, and more, through a
comprehensive and informative program.
I know you've already taken onboard our Command
Indoctrination and Sponsorship programs.
Brilliant on the Basics is not new to any of us
and it emphasizes what we all know we must do
the simple things well to take care of our
Sailors and their families. If we do, the
challenges to follow will be easier to confront.
Brilliant on the Basics should be a Navy wide
focus....execute!

Navy Pride and Professionalism
Navy Pride and Professionalism (formerly Navy
Rights and Responsibilities) includes numerous
important topics and should be delivered by
qualified Command Training Team members (command
personnel who have completed CIN A-050-000) (1)
Decision Making (2) Interpersonal
Communications (3) Command Managed Equal
Opportunity, including Navy policy on sexual
harassment, religious accommodation, hazing, and
fraternization (4) Diversity (5) Conflict
Management (6) Pride in Self and Core Values (7)
Wearing the Uniform (8) Military Etiquette
including Courtesies and Military Bearing (9)
Violent Behavior Awareness (10) Family
Readiness (11) Mentorship and Positive Role
Models (12) Pride in Service

Navy Pride and Professionalism
Navy Pride and Professionalism material is
available on NKO. Commands that do not have the
materials need to obtain and review it ASAP. Use
these resources to teach and discuss topics like
Diversity at your command.

Navy Right Spirit Campaign/Alcohol Awareness
Alcohol AWARE is a 4 hour course taught by
qualified Command personnel (usually Command
ADAMS Facilitators or Medical Staff) designed to
make Sailors aware of the risks involved with
alcohol and how to use it responsibly.

Suicide Awareness
In todays operational environment we need to pay
special attention to stress and anger management
within our ranks. CPPD provides training and
resources on both topics for use in Command
Indoctrination.

Personal Financial Management
Sailors receive 16 hours of Personal Financial
Management during accession training covering the
basics of credit, budget and pay. This allows
your Command Financial Specialists to jump right
in during Command Indoctrination and address
specific issues your command or geographic
location may have to ensure your Sailors stay
financially ready.

Operational Risk Management
Operational Risk Management is more than
memorizing the 5 Steps. Command Indoctrination
should also cover how Sailors use the decision
making tools in their daily work and private
lives. CPPD provides numerous video clips as part
of General Military Training to stimulate
discussion and for use in teaching this important
concept.

Prevention of Sexual Harassment/Sexual Assault
CPPD has created an award winning video called
Megans Story that depicts an incident of
sexual assault, and the events leading up to and
following the assault, from the perspectives of
all involved victim, perpetrator and shipmates.
It provides the viewer with information about
the Navys Sexual Assault Response Program (SARP)
and personnel services provided in the prevention
and response to sexual assault.

Command Indoctrination
At CPPD, providing Education and Training
Opportunities is more than just teaching courses
and graduating students. In order to reach every
Sailor, we must provide easily accessible and
valuable resources to the Fleet and rely on you
to use our products.

Career Development Boards
CPPD is producing a How To video specifically
for Career Development Boards. This will be
another tool for you and will include
requirements and scenarios to help you make your
programs more effective.
We continue to overlook the importance of career
development boards. If you want to set a Sailor
up for success, then you should provide a road
map starting the day they receive orders to your
command, to include sponsorship,
indoctrination, divisional qualifications,
watch-standing duties, warfare qualifications,
CDBs, etc., everything through the PTS
submission.

Career Development Boards are critical to the
success of your Sailors, your commands and the
United States Navy.

CPPD students at Command Master Chief/Chief of
the Boat course receive instruction on Career
Development Boards and how to administer them.
Preparation and planning are the keys to success.

Navy Career Counselors receive Career Development
Board training at Career Counselor school to
ensure you can provide the guidance necessary for
Sailors to make informed decisions.

needs. Part of the preparation for Career
Development Boards needs to be the tailoring of
the sessions to each participant to ensure the
