Title: Towards A CDL Structure Text Repository:

1
Towards A CDL Structure Text Repository
  • A Progress Report from the Structured Text
    Working Group
  • (STWG)
  • 05/20/2004

2
STWGs Charter
  • Advise CDL on specific issues surrounding
    implementation of XML text repositories.
  • Bring together the expertise of individuals who
already had experience with structured Texts
    projects.
  • Develop TEI encoding guidelines and DTDs for a
    cross campus Structured Text Repository.

3
Current STWG Work in Progress
  • Best Practice Guidelines ensure consistent use of
TEI elements (or those of any other DTD) that
will allow for a functional digital repository.
  • Main Issues that have informed the development of
    the guidelines
  • Interoperability
  • How to handle external data streams
    (images, sound, etc.)
  • Descriptive Metadata (indexing, search and
    retrieval.)
  • Preservation
  • The OAC EAD BPG has been used as a model for what
types of instruction should be provided.

4
Current STWG Work cont.Encoding Guidelines
  • Currently the group is in the process of creating
    5 encoding documents.
  • These Include
  • Base Encoding
  • TEI Header Information (Descriptive Metadata)
  • Book Encoding
  • Oral Histories/Interviews
  • Manuscripts/Archival Documents

5
Base Encoding Guidelines
  • These will provide a basic outline of encoding
practices for all texts that are to added to the
    CDL System.
  • Issues covered
  • Character Encoding (UTF 8)
  • Assigning Unique Identifiers (ARKs)
  • Basic structuring of texts.
  • Encoding of related external data streams
    (images, sound, moving image).

6
ltteiHeadergt Guidelines
  • Designed to insure regularized descriptions of
the digital file and the source text.
  • Insure the creation of metadata that allows for
useful indexing (names, subjects, etc.) and
    searching.
  • Is being designed as a possible source of data
that can be transformed into Dublin Core records
for the files corresponding METS record.

7
Text Specific Guidelines
  • Published Books Rare books, monographs,
    journals, etc
  • Interviews/Oral History Transcription of
    interviews
  • Archives/Manuscripts Guidelines for unpublished
    material.

8
Next Steps
  • Currently all guideline documents and DTDs are
in various draft stages, which still need to be
reviewed by STWG and CDL/OAC. (Reviewed in late
    June).
  • Document procedure for submission of structured
    texts. (No date yet).
  • Continue development of guidelines to include
other kinds of texts (newspapers) and to take
advantage of new technological advances at CDL.
  • Suggestions?
