Project description
  • Domestication of cloudberry was the ultimate
    goal
  • Studies on cloudberry included
  • breeding and cultivation, planting machinery
    development, pollination, restoration of used
    peatlands
  • Studies also with other northern berries
  • Vaccinium, Sorbus, Rubus, Amalanchier
  • Analysis of antioxidant capacity and phenolic
    content of the berries

3
Objectives
The main objective was the advancement of
cultivation and use of northern berries,
particularly cloudberry while taking into
consideration the sustainable use of nature and
natural heritage
4
Project Activities (1)
  • Breeding and selection of best cloudberry
    varieties
  • Development of mass propagation technique for
cloudberry and propagation of plantlets for the
    project
  • Adaptation of machinery for soil tilling and
    cloudberry planting
  • Large-scale cultivation of cloudberry and farmer
    training in Finland and Norway
  • Cloudberry pest and disease monitoring

5
Project Activities (2)
  • 6. Experiments on cloudberry pollination
  • 7. Study on the development of normal and
    parthenocarpic cloudberry fruit
  • 8. Assessing of selected arctic bramble clones
for downy mildew tolerance and productivity
  • 9. Monitoring of winter-hardiness and
    performance of new berry species
  • 10. Analysis of a variety of berry samples for
    bioactive components and antioxidant capacity

6
Results (1)
  • Ruby and Cloudy cloudberries named
  • Large germplasm of cloudberry clones
hermaphroditic, giga size, red colored or
    colorless white berries

7
Results (2)
  • Cloudberry was propagated in several different
    systems
  • sterile in vitro agar culture
  • temporary liquid immersion
  • rhizomes in greenhouse
  • Rhizome method is the most economic way to
    propagate cloudberry

8
Results (3)
  • Machinery adapted to cloudberry planting
increases efficacy and lowers the costs of
    establishment of new cloudberry fields

9
Results (4)
  • Cloudberry cultivation fields were established in
    Finland and Norway
  • Covering the cultivation gives growth benefits by
providing wind shield and decreasing temperature
    fluctuations
  • Information was delivered in seminars, meetings
and in media TV, radio, newspapers

10
Results (4)
  • DVD-video "Berries - gold of the north"
  • Cloudberry growers guide (Booklet)

11
Results (5)
  • The pest Galerucella nymphaeae causes problems in
cloudberry cultivations, and control systems or
    insecticides will be needed
  • Covering the cultivation gives protection from
    pest invasion

12
Results (6)
  • Hives with pollinating insects can be used to
increase the efficiency of cloudberry pollination

13
Results (7)
  • Knowledge was obtained about fruit and flower
    development of cloudberry
  • Based on flower induction studies a guide was
made how to promote flowering and cropping to get
    several crops within a year
  • Cloudberry develops parthenocarpic fruits when
    treated with 3??-hydroxylated gibberellins

14
Results (8)
  • A promising downy mildew resistant arctic bramble
clone was selected and its propagation was
    started for further studies
  • Control of downy mildew in experimental
    conditions was promising
  • Method for quantitative analysis of downy mildew
    in arctic bramble was developed

15
Results (9)
  • Selected plants from Vaccinium, Sorbus,
Amalanchier and trailing Rubus were shown to be
    winter-hardy
  • Several new clones or cultivars can be provided
    for home gardeners and production

16
Results (10)
  • Several studies on the phytochemistry of northern
    fruits were published
  • A method developed for testing in vitro
bioavailability of phenolic compounds showed a
significant variation in the stability of the
phenolic antioxidants following in vitro digestion

17
Results (10)
  • An in vitro method was established to determine
the potential of fruit, juice extracts and
compounds to retard and/or alleviate the
    onset/progression of atherosclerosis
  • The protective antioxidant behaviour of Rubus
species was corroborated by feeding fruit fly
    with cloudberry juices
