6GEWEX CONTRIBUTIONS TO ACC
GOAL TO IMPROVE THE CAPABILITIES OF MODELS TO
SIMULATE THE THE EFFECTS OF ANTHROPOGENIC
INFLUENCED FORCINGS SUCH AS CO2, AEROSOLS AND
LAND USE CHANGE AND THEIR FEEDBACKS ON CLIMATE.
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS THE DATA INTEGRATION FOR
MODEL EVALUATION (DIME) PROJECT HAS LED
TO SIGNIFICANT MODEL IMPROVEMENTS BY FACILITATING
COMPARISONS BETWEEN CLOUD DATA AND MODEL OUTPUT.
THE CIRC (CONTINUOUS INTERCOMPARISON OF RADIATION
CODES) IS EXPECTED TO LEAD TO SIMILAR
IMPROVEMENTS IN RADIATION CODES.
PLANS GEWEX IS PLANNING TO LAUNCH LUCID TO
EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF LAND USE ON CLIMATE
CHANGE.
7GEWEX CONTRIBUTIONS TO EXTREMES
GOAL TO UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES
RESPONSIBLE FOR CLIMATE EXTREMES. THIS
UNDERSTANDING SHOULD ULTIMATELY LEAD TO A
PREDICTION SYSTEM FOR EXTREMES.
FOREST MORTALITY DUE TO DROUGHT
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS GEWEX HAS LAUNCHED A
STUDY OF DROUGHTS IN CANADA THAT HAS IDENTIFIED
MANY OF THE PROCESSES INVOLVED IN DROUGHT
INCLUDING SOME PROCESSES LIKE VIRGA THAT ARE
POORLY MODELED IN DRY ATMOSPHERES.
T. Hogg - CFS
PLANS GEWEX WILL LAUNCH A NUMBER OF DROUGHT AND
FLOOD STUDIES IN OTHER CLIMATE REGIMES TO ASSESS
THE ROLE OF DIFFERENT SYNOPTIC CONDITIONS, LAND
COVERS AND CLIMATE ON DROUGHTS AND FLOODS.
STUDIES ARE ASSESSING LINKS BETWEEN DROUGHT RISK
AND DROUGHT PLANNING.
8GEWEX CONTRIBUTIONS TO ATMOS CHEM CLOUDS
GOAL TO UNDERSTAND AND MODEL THE ROLE OF
ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY IN CLOUDS AND THEIR IMPACT
ON THE GLOBAL CLIMATE SYSTEM.
MODIS
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS GEWEX HAS LAUNCHED AN
ASSESSMENT OF SATELLITE PRODUCTS THAT MAP AEROSOL
OPTICAL DEPTH AS A FIRST STEP IN DEVELOPING AN
ADEQUATE GLOBAL DATA BASE FOR THESE STUDIES.

0.4
PLANS GEWEX WILL PARTICIPATE IN A
JOINT IGAC/GEWEX/ILEAPS STUDY OF AEROSOLS,
PRECIPITATION AND CLOUDS.
9GEWEX CONTRIBUTIONS TO IPY
GOAL TO UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HIGH
LATITUDE PROCESSES THROUGH MEASURMENT AND
MODLEING OF THEIR IMPACT ON THE GLOBAL ENERGY
AND WATER CYCLE.
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS GEWEX HAS ADOPTED NEESPI
AS A NEW RHP (FORMERLY CSE). NEESPI HAS A MAJOR
IPY COMPONENT WITH US AND RUSSIAN
FUNDING. RESEARCH FINDINGS IN MAGS WILL BE
PUBLISHED AS A BOOK THIS YEAR.
BALTEX TERRITORY
PLANS CEOP WILL ESTABLISH SOME
NORTHERN REFERENCE SITES AND GEWEX WILL LAUNCH AN
IPY FIELD AND MODELING STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF
AEROSOLS AT HIGH LATITUDES (DEPENDING ON FUNDING)
10GEWEX CONTRIBUTIONS TO SEASONAL PREDICTION
GOAL TO CONTRIBUTE TO IMPROVING THE SKILL OF
SEASONAL-TO-DECADAL PREDICTIONS BY DEVELOPING
BETTER PARAMETERIZATIONS OF LAND AND CLOUD
PROCESSES.
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS GEWEX HAS ADOPTED A
CONCEPT THAT WILL ENCOURAGE ITS INTERACTIONS WITH
MODELING GROUPS.
PLANS GEWEX WILL UNDERTAKE STUDIES TO DETERMINE
THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF LAND SURFACE CONDITIONS TO
SEASONAL PREDICTION
11GEWEX CONTRIBUTIONS TO MONSOONS
GOAL TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING AND CAPABILITY
TO PREDICT MONSOONS ON A REGIONAL AND GLOBAL
BASIS.
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS GEWEX AND CLIVAR
HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE 2006 SUMMER FIELD
CAMPAIGN FOR AMMA. GEWEX HAS ALSO LAUNCHED
MAHASRI WHICH IS PLANNING A MAJOR FIELD EFFORT
IN 2008.
PLANS GEWEX IN COLLABORATION WITH CLIVAR AND
YOTC INTENDS TO LAUNCH THE ASIAN MONSOON YEAR
(AMY) IN 2008. THIS MAY DEVELOP INTO THE
INTERNATIONAL MONSOON YEAR (IMY) IN THE FUTURE.

21A CRITICAL ISSUE FOR 2007 HOW WILL
IGWCO INTERACT WITH THE GEO WATER GOALS?
- Proposals for Water 2007-2009
- WA-07-P1 Global Water Quality Monitoring
- Many aspects of water quality monitoring and
assessment, both in-situ and remotely sensed are
severely deficient. Operational observation
systems need to be developed, and the resulting
information systems should be made compatible and
interoperable as part of the system of systems. - WA-07-P2 Satellite Water Measurements
- Develop an operational mechanism to provide
water observations to support the upgrade of
deficient run-off water gauge networks. Combine
different types of satellite data that are
relevant for water measurements (quantity and
quality) with in-situ observations for better
accuracy and global coverage. Produce an
implementation plan for a broad global water
cycle data integration system that combines
in-situ, satellite data and model outputs.
