  • Some more terpene work needed
  • OK to put studies onto PCA website
  • EHPV
  • issue is gathering exposure risk data
  • not rushing into this

3
European Rosin Update
  • No new developments in lawsuit - question of
    standing
  • HARRPA plans 3 publications
  • One submitted and rejected
  • No objections, so far to posting the work on the
    PCA website
  • Reports to be sent from CEFIC

  • Prioritization risk vs. volume
  • OSOR
  • Cost and data sharing
  • Effect on SMEs
  • Natural substances exclusions
  • Strengthening the ECA vs. states
  • Substitution
  • Authorization for only 5 years
  • Technical Guidance Document

5
REACH
  • HARRPA will be forming a Task Force / Working

list must be prioritized for further screening
  • The Canadian environmental and health authorities
have divided the substances into initial lists of
    high, medium and low priority
  • PCA substances are in all three lists
  • Special interest in UVCBs Tall oil rosin is the
    poster child
  • Relevant information to be submitted by Sept 16,
    2005

10
Testing Subcommittee2005 Goals
  • 1, Keep up to date all the ASTM and PCA Test
methods for which we are responsible
  • 2. Continue to establish the feasibility of
developing an ASTM standard method for
determining neutrals in tall oil fractions and
gum rosin, based on the solid phase based on
    the solid phase extraction method
  • 3. Amend ASTM test method D 509 "Testing rosin"
and initiate work with Food Chemical Codex to
permit use of Gardner color scale for food grade
rosin products as a precursor to making the same
change in FDA regulation 21 CFR.178.3870 Rosin
    and rosin resins.
  • 4. Establish the interest of the gum rosin
industry in moving to the use of the Gardner
color scale rather than the old USRG scale.
  • 5. Complete the balloting and paperwork needed
for the PCA test method for the chemical
characterization of gum rosins using gas
chromatography to become an ISO test method
  • 6. Carry out a round robin to compare the
capabilities of HARRPA members to analyze
    selected tall oil fractions

11
