What is Assertive Mentoring?
  • Tracks whether students are on target
  • Aspirational targets are set and progress
    constantly monitored
  • Evidence based meetings
  • Appropriate interventions
  • Non-negotiable, dont lose face
  • Students and staff more aware of where they are
    in each subject and what they need to do to
    improve

Why did we do it?
  • We did lots of soft mentoring
  • Difficult to judge impact
  • Wanted to focus on the use of data
  • Wanted consistent, reliable forecast grades
  • Wanted to raise achievement further

How was it implemented?
  • Year 11 only
  • SLT to be mentors
  • Meeting schedule amended
  • Monthly departmental tracking meetings
  • Discussion encouraged
  • Closely monitored

The future at Aston Manor
  • Vertical House Structure from 2008
  • Every student will have an academic tracking
    mentor (Their House Tutor)
  • SLT continue Assertive mentoring with Year 11
    students (started already in Year 10)
  • Weekly rota for focus year group
  • Academic tracking co-ordinators provide data
  • Interim reports 6 times per year
  • Staff consistent and confident in entry of data
  • All students aware of their own achievement
