2Weeks In Advance
- Write asking for parent helpers - we also posted
requests on the school website - Look for grants to apply for if there are any
available - Book external people/trips (Set Point in my
case)
3AimsWhat I wanted to achieve from Nursery to
Year 6
- Enjoyment and enthusiasm for science parents and
children - Raising the profile and acknowledgement of the
importance of science - Development of science vocabularyrelated to our
school improvement plan - Children to talk science at home and at school by
discussing what they had done - Revision and coverage of topics
- Bringing in parents to school
4Where I Began
- I went through and listed all the QCA topics for
Science and put together all those that related - e.g. I chunked Ourselves, Health Growth,
Teeth Health and Keeping Healthy. - I booked a Set Point workshop for each year group
5 This Left 8 Broad Topics
- Ourselves ? Health Growth ? Teeth Health ?
Keeping Healthy - Light Dark ? Light Shadows ? Earth, Sun
Moon - Pushes Pulls ? Forces Movement ? Magnets
Springs ? Friction ? Forces in Action - Using Electricity ? Circuits Conductors
- Plants ? Plants and Animals in the Local
Environment ? Variation ? Habitats ? Life-Cycles
? Micro Organisms - Sorting Materials ? Grouping Changing Materials
? Materials Rocks Soils ? Keeping Warm - Sound Hearing ? Changing Sounds
- Solids Liquids and How they can be Separated ?
Gasses all Around Us ? Changing State ? More
about Dissolving ? Reversible Irreversible
Changes
6Next Steps
- I got together with the rest of the staff and
they chose one topic each - I gave them a list of topics along with some
suggested activitiesand ideas for resources
7Resources I Used/Suggested
100 Science Experiments isbn 0746057571 (absolut
e bible!) The Little Book of Science
Experiments (download www.planetscience.com) Th
ere are a range of others, but these were the
main two
8Organisationof the Week
- Each teacher had to organise 5 different
experiments for their topic and put each one
together with all the resources a box - 6 children (max per group) led by the adult and
rotated around the 5 activities lasting half a
day in total i.e. 35 mins per activity - The boxes went around the classes according to
the timetable - Each class also had half a day led by Set Point
9I Made A Whole School Timetable of Helpers For
The Five Days
10Then Transferred This To A Weekly Timetable For
Each Year Group
11Organisationof the Boxes
- In each box there were
- All the resources needed for that experiment to
cover 30 children in total - The instructions (laminated) so that they were
suitable for a parent, with limited scientific
knowledge, to follow if necessary - See page 2 for example plans
12(No Transcript)
13Format For The Planning
I asked the staff to include specific things and
all follow the same formatso that all was
included and it was easy for parent helpers to
follow (I gave them one of my plans to model)
- Vocabulary
- A list of questions
- How to carry out the experiment
- The Science behind it explained in simple terms
- A list of resources
14Before The Week Begins
- Collect all plans and make sure that everyone has
a copy of Rota For Boxes - Give everyone a copy of ALL the plans so they can
work out what is suitable for their class and
adapt/differentiate if needed - Delegate where parents are going to be helping
- Let parents know where they are and when!
- Give timetables of this to teachersthese were a
nightmare to organise... - Phone the local paper!
- Bribe everyone with chocolate doughnuts
- Sort out lab coats and badges (we dressed up!)
15Things we could have done
- We intended to have an evening where children
came back and looked at constellations - We could have arranged trips (Year 4 did go to
the zoo) - We could have had more people in that were from
science in industry/medicine
16What Id do Differently
- Give teachers the responsibility of organising
their own parent helpers - Collect the plans in plenty of time and check
them thoroughly to ensure that all experiments
take the same amount of time
