Title: White is the new Black

1
White is the new Black
  • Literacy Numeracy using ICT Interactive
    Whiteboards

2
Timetable
  • This session
  • Introduction to the Interactive Whiteboard
  • Numeracy
  • Next Session
  • Literacy

3
But first
  • How much do you know?
  • Using the Interactive Whiteboard with the strand
    of Data in Mathematics.
  • Open up your Internet browser and go to
    www.anseo.net
  • Next click on ICT training then
  • What do you know about ICT?

4
Achievement!
  • Huge Educational Value Already!
  • Whole class involvement
  • Instant feedback
  • Bright and Colourful Graphs
  • Choice of Loads of styles
  • Provides for oral math language
  • And it only took 5 minutes.

5
ICT-Whats the big deal?
  • Calculators, Videos, Televisions, DVD players,
    OHPs, etc.
  • Well be using Computers/Laptops, Data Projectors
    and Interactive Whiteboards.
  • But why bother?

6
Why bother?
  • Computers provide several different learning
    styles at the same time.
  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Kinaesthetic
  • For example a tables test?

7
Traditional vs ICT
  • Children could work at their own pace
  • The computer program could be tweaked to
    differentiate childs needs.
  • Computer gave instant feedback rather than having
    to wait

8
Other Advantages
  • Other advantages of ICT
  • More motivating
  • More fun
  • Caters for differing needs at the click of a
    mouse
  • Saves paper
  • Can provide detailed assessment records
  • Well see more as we go on

9
Equipment
  • A PC with a data projector or a large screen
    monitor
  • A Wireless Keyboard / Mouse
  • A rota system, several PCs or a computer room
  • Interactive Whiteboard

10
The Data Projector
  • A data projector plugs into a PC and simply
projects whatever is on the PCs screen.
  • Excellent for Whole Class activities
  • Can use any ICT resources successfully
  • Prices coming down all the time!

11
Buying a data projector
  • Make sure at least 2000 lumens in brightness for
    the average window-heavy classroom.
  • Cost ranges from 650 upwards
  • Replacement bulbs can cost as much!

12
Limitations
  • Although the projector and PC have hundreds of
uses, they can be limiting as the user still has
to use the PC to control all the action.
  • It would be great to be able to interact with the
    actual projected image

13
Wireless Keyboard / Mouse
  • Wireless Keyboard Mouse
  • Portable around the classroom
  • Children can interact from seats without need to
    come up to laptop/PC
  • Prices approx 20 upwards

14
But
  • But
  • Wouldnt it be great to write all over the
    projected image?
  • Wouldnt it be great to highlight certain parts
    of the projected image?
  • Wouldnt it be great to do stuff that you can do
    with chalk and more?

15
The Revolution!
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vDMTAOMg5RBw

16
The Interactive Whiteboard
  • The Clárbháin Idirghníomhaithe (CBI) project
provides tonnes of information about IWBs in
    Ireland.
  • You can log on to the CBI web site
    http//www.cbiproject.net

17
What else?
  • An interactive whiteboard can allow the user to
  • Draw or highlight directly onto the projected
    image
  • Interact with web sites, (buttons, links, etc.)
  • Drag and drop items around the screen.
  • Everything you can do with a mouse but directly
    on the projected image.

18
IWB vs paper vs PCs
  • What are the advantages of the IWB over the
    projector?
  • What about a worksheet?
  • More motivating
  • Interacting directly with big screen
  • Etc.

19
The bottom line
  • So how much does it all cost?
  • Promethan - 5,000
  • SMART - 4,000
  • E-beam - 700
  • Many more www.cbiproject.net have full list

20
Software
  • Certain brands of IWBs have their own specific
software which works on their specific IWBs.
  • However, MOST Interactive Whiteboards can
integrate with ANY piece of software.

21
Numeracy
  • So how can we use interactive whiteboards to help
    children learn numeracy?
  • The Internet
  • Spreadsheets

22
Tables
  • Drill and practice
  • Hundreds of web sites that will allow children to
    practice their tables
  • Try out
  • http//www.anseo.net/anseo/maths.php
  • Tables Abiator multiplication tables
  • Play games according to interest
  • Google search for more

23
Other Websites
  • Brain Pop Junior
  • Great videos and activities
  • One stop shop
  • http//www.rainforestmaths.com

24
Spreadsheets
  • Excellent for all strands of maths curriculum
  • Place Value (Number)
  • Number patterns (Algebra)
  • Hundred Square (Number/Algebra)
  • Graphs (Data)
  • Probability (Data)

25
Number Patterns
  • Excel or any spreadsheet will do
  • Make your cells nice and big
  • Start a pattern, 1, 3, 5
  • Ask what comes next?
  • Highlight the sequence.
  • Drag the little black dot to check

26
100 square
  • No need for the compulsory paper 100-square on
    the wall anymore!
  • Highlight numbers
  • Reveal patterns
  • Blank out numbers
  • Very easy to make

27
Data
  • What is the your favourite colour?
  • Design a graph
  • Excel gives 100s of different graphs

28
Probability
  • Tossing a coin 20 times
  • Well use a spinner function in Excel for this
  • We can then graph it

29
Place Value
  • This requires a little bit of technical skill
  • We want the child to see how units, tens and
    hundreds affect a number
  • How many of each? See what the number looks like

30
A special treat
  • Even though you know how to make these, Ive made
you some to download from my web site.
  • http//www.anseo.net

31
White is the new Black
  • Session 2

32
Small Recap
  • What is an interactive whiteboard?

33
Tonight
  • Literacy
  • In the last year, ICT has revolutionised
    communication as we know it

  • Well run through a quiz called Fling the Teacher
  • Easy to see how IWB can be used

50
Sharing
  • Another way that ICT can open many doors is
through sharing your work with others.
  • The boundaries of the classroom are broken and we
    can share with the world
