Research Title
  • Toxicity of Lake Munson and its effects on the
    marine environment

3
Toxicity
When something is contaminated by a toxic
substance poisonous.
4
Experimental Design
  • Collect water sample from Lake Munson
  • Assess the toxicity of the water sample
    collected. (pH)
  • Obtain water fleas.
  • Obtain DMW (dilute mineral water)
  • Raise the water fleas and investigate the effects
    of Lake Munsons slight toxicity.

5
Hypothesis
  • The pollution in Lake Munson will increase the
mortality rate and decrease the reproduction rate
    of its inhabitants (water fleas)

6
Our Variables
  • Independent variables Water sample from Lake
Munson and diluted mineral water (DMW)
  • Dependent variable The number of water fleas
  • Controlled variables Amount of water used, the
containers, food for the water fleas,
    temperature, etc.

Observations
Left DMW Right Lake Munson Sample
8
Observations Testing of PH levels of DMW (left)
and Lake Munson sample (right) DMW PH Level of
7 Lake Munson Sample (right) PH Level of 6.5
9
Results
  • Both independent samples (DMW and Lake Munson)
showed a general increase in population.
  • However, the sample containing the water from
Lake Munson had a lower population and a higher
    death rate.

10
Results
11
Conclusion
  • Overall increase in the number of water fleas in
    each of the water samples
  • Water in Lake Munson proved to be habitable, but
the reproduction rate of the water fleas was
    slightly lower.
  • Hypothesis proved correct - no death and more
    reproduction in DMW samples
  • Lake Munson may be degraded but it is not toxic.

Special Thanks to Mr. Russel Frydenborg and
D.E.P. for supplying our groupwith the water
fleas, algae, yeast, and all the materialsthat
aided us in carrying out our experiment
