Title: Industrial Hemp

1
Industrial Hemp
  • And Its Environmental Benefits

2
  • Industrial hemp is pesticide free naturally.

3
Why Pesticides Are Bad
  • There is a massive amount of scientific
evidence linking pesticide residues to a variety
of illnesses, including cancer, birth defects,
autism and other neurological problems, and
    infertility.

4
Industrial hemp is GMO free.
5
Why GMOs Are Bad
  • Theyre genetically engineered to withstand the
    excessive application of dangerous pesticides.
  • Animal studies have revealed that consuming GMOs
increases protein allergies, damage to liver,
kidneys, and other organs, white blood cell
    counts, and infertility.
  • Results of the few human studies are alarming
Six-fold increase in death among infants of
mothers fed GM soy link between rBGH and colon,
    breast, and other cancers.
  • We dont know because GMO foods arent labeled
and theyve only been on the market since 1994,
but are pervasive in the food supply (most corn,
soy, cotton, canola, and, in 2009, sugar).

6
Hemp vs. Cotton
  • Conventional cotton requires 1/3lb of chemical
fertilizer and pesticides to produce 1 pound of
    cotton fabric.
  • Incredibly almost half of all agricultural
chemicals used in the US are applied to cotton!
  • Cotton is the largest user of water among all
    agricultural commodities. Estimates indicate that
cotton represents more than half of the irrigated
    agricultural land in the world.
  • Hemp requires no pesticides, is not genetically
modified, and can be farmed without irrigation.
  • Wearing a hemp t-shirt instead of a
conventionally grown cotton one saves 1,900 kJ of
energy, 0.0002 acres of land, 744 gallons of
water, 0.17 lbs of chemical fertilizer and 0.0011
    lbs of toxic pesticides.

7
The Environmental Benefits of Organic Industrial
Hemp Farming
  • Organic industrial hemp farming pulls greenhouse
gases out of the atmosphere by capturing carbon
in the biomass of the plant, as well as the soil.
  • Organic industrial hemp, using of animal manure
instead of conventional natural gas fertilizer,
can, like other organic crops fertilized with
manure, sequester more carbon than any other land
    use, including wetlands and forests.
  • Organic farming increases soil carbon up to 28
    percent.
  • The use of natural gas fertilizers is responsible
for 6 of total greenhouse gas emissions.

8
Hemp-Lime Construction
  • This warehouse made of hemp-lime blocks is
super-insulated, requiring no heating or air
conditioning. 76 of all power plant-generated
electricity in the US is used to operate
    buildings.
  • The hemp warehouse is carbon negative, with 80
tons of carbon trapped in its walls. A
conventional brick and block building of this
size would have produced 450 tons of carbon.

9
Industrial Hemp Insulation 75 a buildings heat
loss goes through its walls, roof and floor.
10
Using industrial hemp fiber conserves energy
during manufacturing and makes cars that are
lighter and, therefore, more fuel efficient.
