1. Tests of the MRPCs delivered in Bologna.
5
Tests (1)
As reported in the previous meeting we received 3
MRPC on December 2005, serial number 11, 17, 18.
We tested them extensively and found them very
noisy. Another set of MRPCs arrived in October
2006, serial number 50, 51, 52. They were built
at CERN by Bologna Liceo Fermi students. Very
good results on efficiency and rates were
obtained with the second telescope (presented in
the previous EEE Project EC meeting) In December
2006 all the MRPCs (3chambers x 4 schools) for
the Bologna area arrived. We tested (gas
tightness, efficiency and rates) all the chambers
obtaining homogeneous performances.

Tests (2)
MRPCs tests summary
A total of 18 MRPCs have been tested

2. Spatial Resolution measurements
10
Spatial resolution (1)
Method We used the top and bottom chambers to
predict the position of the track in the middle
one. Then we compared the measured position with
the predicted one
Our coordinate system x axis is perpendicular to
the strips y axis is along the strips

Spatial resolution (2) y coordinate
Time difference distributions are not centered in

Mean 2.5 ns
Mean 2.2 ns
Mean 2.3 ns
Mean 2.2 ns
Time difference (ns)
Difference between the expected position in
middle chamber and the measured one

Spatial resolution (3) y coordinate
apply offset correction for each strip we
obtain
x-y distribution before and after offset

3. Other measurements
15
Other measurements (1)
RATE vs DISTANCE
1 Muon rate as a function of the distance between
the MRPCs compared with simulation
2 Muon zenith angle (in space) compared with
simulation
16
Other measurements (2)
We measured the telescope trigger rate both
using GPS and TDCs time and using the trigger
card as scaler
17
4. Trigger card and GPS Interface test
18
Trigger card and GPS Interface test
We tested the Trigger card (Local Trigger Module)
designed by E. Scapparone and the GPS interface.

GPS Interface
Provides MRPCs trigger
Provides GPS time and reset TDC clock counters

5. Optimization of software for schools
20
Optimization of software for schools
  • In order to help students and teachers to monitor
the telescope we prepared an user friendly
graphical interface (EEE Commands Panel) to the
    analysis programs
  • With the help of this panel it is possible to
  • Organize data files
  • Analyze data
  • Look to histograms
  • Look to event display

21
6. Installation inside schools
22
Installation inside schools (1)
Reggio Emilia inauguration on 11/05/07

Installation inside schools (2)
Status of Reggio Emilia telescope
  • Inauguration of the telescope in May
  • We are working with students and teachers to set
    the detector to work.
  • Soon we will have the detector in full data
acquisition. We were waiting for GPS interface
card and now they are ready!

Next telescope inauguration
  • Installation of telescope in the Liceo Fermi in
Bologna is completed, in a short time we will be
    ready to inaugurate

Next telescope installation
  • We are planning installation inside Liceo
Galvani in Bologna. We are waiting for DC/DC
    converters and FEAs (few weeks)

24
After installation inside Liceo Galvani we will
have 3 telescopes in the Bologna area
Installation inside schools (3)
After installation inside Liceo Galvani we will
have 3 telescopes in the Bologna area

7.EEE Project Bologna group web site
26
EEE Project Bologna group web site
  • For schools
  • to share usefull informations
  • to share pictures of the EEE telescopes
  • For students
  • to learn through links on cosmic rays physics
  • For researchers
  • to keep usefull documents and files under
    restricted areas (mechanics and electronics,
    analisys results, schools database)
  • For everyone
  • to inform on the EEE Project in Bologna
  • http//www.bo.infn.it/eee/
  • will be soon released

27
8. EEE Project DVD
28
EEE Project DVD
  • In order to prepare a DVD to be distributed to
High Schools we prepared texts, pictures and
    photos regarding
  • Cosmic ray physics
  • The MRPC detector and the EEE telescope
  • Working principles of the detectors and the muon
    telescope
  • We also helped in film recording at Reggio Emilia
    telescope.

Conclusions
  • All the MRPCs delivered in Bologna have been
    tested
  • With the exeption of the first set all the MRPCs
    show good performances
  • The spatial resolution has been measured to be
    (1.6 x 0.96) cm2
  • Tests have been performed on VME Trigger card and
GPS Interface so that we can take data without
    the need of NIM crate
  • Analysis codes have been optimized to monitor the
detector and a user friendly interface has been
    prepared
  • Installation inside schools started and is going
on. By the end of this year we may have 4 working
telescopes (3 in Bologna 1 Reggio Emilia)
  • Two schools need the full gas and electronics
    equipment
