12Community Partners
- From the beginning of the program, we have used
all local vendors subcontractors. Many of them
donate materials labor to our projects. - Currently, there are over 40 businesses
involved with our program. - The local newspapers have written many articles
about our students building houses. - A local realtor cut his commission in half, and
we were able to sell our first home during the
winter, in a down market. We still made a profit. - We focus on keeping an open door process for
selecting the licensed subs. We look at bids and
proposed interactions with the students. - Several students are working with our local
Rotary Organization to begin installing bus
shelters that would be used by both students
waiting for school busses and riders of Tillamook
County Transit. - Many retired professionals volunteer on a
regular basis, sharing their knowledge and career
history with students.
13NKN Construction Trades
Self sustaining program.
We sell everything that we build, including
storage sheds, green houses and homes.
Proceeds pay for purchase of land, permits and
materials. Profits cover class supplies,
salaries, license etc
The NKN District School Board has purchased 5
lots in a cul-de-sac that are located two blocks
from our classroom. We purchase one from the
district each year for our home project.
The future of our program depends on becoming
fully self-sustaining. Our school district is
facing budget cuts as most schools in Oregon.
Next year, our High School will lose an elective
and may face further cuts.
14Students
General Construction 1 and 2 are primarily
ninth and tenth graders, these are one class
period per trimester, and are discovery classes
for students to find out if they wish to continue
in the program. Whether they stay or leave, these
youngsters will have learned a great deal about
construction. Construction Trades is for
student who have completed the first two classes.
The class is the last two periods of the day, for
a total of 2 ½ hrs, and includes the entire
school year, in which we build a complete home.
All students are aware that any misconduct
pertaining to safety, language, or harassment,
may result in dismissal. Pride of workmanship,
teamwork and personal accomplishments continue to
be our primary focus. Each student is encouraged
to work at being a better person and talented
builder. Students in Construction Trades can
earn up to 12 credit hours from TBCC and PCC.
Our students can also earn credits from Northwest
College of Construction. OSHA 10 hr and 30 hr
cards are available to students who complete our
course.
15Activities
Our students have participated in the Tillamook
County Job Fair for the last three years. We
have taken 28 young ladies from our middle school
High School to the Women in Trades Fair in
Portland for the last three years. The
Construction Trades Class has competed at the
SkillsUSA competition at state. We have visited
classic Victorian homes in Astoria, and modern
upscale homes in Manzanita. Our students work
with a local recycling center CARTM. We have
also been involved in food drives for the local
food banks. At least once a trimester, we take
our Construction Trades Class out to a local
restaurant for lunch. It is part of their reward
for what they accomplish each day on the house
project. All of the construction students
compete in a nail-off competition, earning prizes
such as hammers, tool belts, tape measures and
other tools.
16Finally
We continue to strive for excellence in our
projects, showing the students that they can go
further than they ever imagined. We celebrate
our students success, as they leave for further
education and careers. We continue to look for
opportunities to connect with our local
communities. We do not want our program to be
just credible, but an INCREDIBLE program.
