2
welcome!
  • Hic Rhodus hic saltus.
  • In fact the relationship between librarians and
    open access is difficult.
  • I got a lot of praise when I was recently asked
to deliver a talk on the representing commercial
publishers views on open access to a bunch of
    librarians.

3
truths
  • The empirical evidence suggests that there is
little, but strong, open access in LIS.
  • One can argue that this is just the lazy status
    quo.
  • Many people fear the transition from the old to
    the new librarian.

4
old librarian
  • Is an information nanny.
  • Works with the information seeker.
  • Has low level of technical skills.
  • Enjoys status from their position as
    intermediary.
  • Has a love/hate relationship with the vendor.

5
new librarian
  • Is an advertising agent.
  • Works with the information provider.
  • Has a high level of technical digital information
    skills.
  • Has a love/hate relationship with archives and
    computers.
  • May never come into existence.

6
todays meeting
  • This is the place of the collective jump.
  • The I wonna hold your hands, you are not
    alone thing.
  • We try to be as informal as possible, and
    encourage interaction.
  • There is no webcam.
