Title: INTAS 03515296 Studies at the IG RAS
1INTAS 03-51-5296Studies at the IG RAS
- Data base treatment
- Testing of the local model SPONSOR with a new
procedure of snow heat conductivity - Development of new snow cover local model /
parameterization scheme - Testing of the scheme during participation in
SnowMIP-2 - Economy-related estimates of snow cover effects
in different regions of Russia - Regional studies of interannual variations of
snow cover depth, density and other features - Statistical studies of snow and air temperature
influence on interannual variations of permafrost
characteristics, and on variations of river
runoff in Volga, Ob, Yenisey and Lena basins.
2- Papers prepared (to be prepared) at the IG RAS
within our INTAS project - Interannual Variability of Winter Snow
Accumulation and Runoff in Four River Basins of
Northern Eurasia (Bratislava extended abstract) - Permafrost snow / air temperature relations (to
be prepared) - Large-scale snow accumulation in Eurasia in
relation to atmospheric circulation (submitted to
International Journal of Climatology) - Local model testing (Bratislava extended
abstract) - New version of local model development (?)
- Economy-related snow influence (to be prepared).
3Data base treatment All main data sets were
finished and organized. Some new (and
voluminous!) data sets were obtained (such as
meteorology for ex-USSR at about 2100 stations,
plus some worldwide data sets). Unique data from
polar snow sites (Franz-Josef Land, Novaya
Zemlya, Polar Urals) obtained during the
International Geophysical Year (1957-59) are
being digitized and translated to English. New
data are welcome.
4Testing of SPONSOR model against Uzbekistan data
5Soil surface temperature (C) at Dukant in 1990
observed, calculated with Sturm snow conductivity
and effective heat conductivity of snow cover
with difference in effective heat conductivities
of individual snow layers accounted for
6Snow water equivalent (mm) at Kyzylcha in 1988
observed, calculated with Sturm snow conductivity
and effective heat conductivity of snow cover
with difference in effective heat conductivities
of individual snow layers accounted for
7Development of the new model of snow cover -
each snow layer appears after a snowfall - snow
physical properties are specified for fresh snow
at the given temperature, then they change
according to densening, crystal transformations,
depth hoar formation/destruction, melting, rain
falling on the top, etc. - snow layers are
united once their properties are close enough.
SnowMIP-2 experiments with heat/water balance
models, tested at 5 sites located in Canada,
Colorado, Japan, Finland and Switzerland, 1-2
winter seasons at each of the sites. They provide
starting conditions, local landscape parameters
and meteorological variables with 20-30 min time
steps.

structure and metamorphism - N1, N2 . calculation layers of the snow cover
model - h1,h2 . real layers of the snow cover model
