General model of the information search process

• Conceptualizing information need
• Expressing that need in terms understandable to
  the system
• Cross checking of the conceptualized need vs. the
  outputs from the system
• If the match isnt satisfactory quit, or revise
  the search terms or methods

Classic info retrieval model
This was the accepted model for information
retrieval. In more recent years, we moved toward
to the realization that information retrieval
spans more than just inputs and outputs.

Satisficing behavior

• Bates model is only one of the information
  seeking models out there
• Satisficing is a term coined by Herbert Simon,
  combination of satisfying and suffice
• We believe that people routinely satisfice during
  their information search process

• Judging Information quality
• Criteria author/source credibility, timeliness,
  accuracy, etc.
• Questions to ask for evaluation (UC-Berkeley

• What type of domain does it come from?
• Is it published by an entity that makes sense?
• Who wrote the page?
• Is the page dated? Is it current enough?
• What are the author's credentials on this
  subject?
• Are there links to other resources on the topic?
