Title: Workpackage 5: Brokerage Systems and Learning Management
1Workpackage 5Brokerage Systems and Learning
Management
Kickoff meeting, Hanover
2003-12-02
Proposed Work Plan - Call for Participation
- Proposed by
- Ambjörn Naeve Bernd SimonJuan Quemada
2Motivation
- The whole power of science is the power of
shared ideas.(Paul Jones) - Universities generate content every day through
their courses and seminars. Then they throw it
away.(Dennis Tsichritzis) - Every knowledge-based organization law firm,
hospital, or professional services firm wastes
time, money and human energy recreating
intellectual assets. - (Thomas H. Davenport)
3Current Issues
- A few brokerage systems (knowledge markets) do
already exist in the education domain, but lack
wide adoption - An increasing number of brokerage systems are
currently being built (more than 10 brokers alone
in primary/secondary ed in Austria, ) - Lack of interoperability among various
initiatives - Administrative view on learning resources
instead of an Pedagogical view
4Deliverables
- D5.1 Prototype of integrated brokerage
environment - D5.2 Report on trials with prototype taking into
account the user and system interoperability
perspective - D5.3 Common paper on Conceptual Learning
Management - D5.4 Guidelines for brokerage system deployment
and system integration. - D5.5 Report on the Open Call Workshop on
Learning Resource Brokerage and Learning
Management - D5.6 Fully operational brokerage environment

7D5.2 Report on trials (user and system
interoperability perspective) (Month 12,
Responsibility Bernd, ..)
- User perspective
- Perform real life trials with brokerage systems
- such as EducaNext, Ariadne
- invite and support users (ProLearners and
beyond) interested in educational simulations,
knowledge management, - Evaluate them using user surveys
- first test of survey instrument in the context of
EducaNext (December / January 2004) - re-do survey in November/December 2004
- expand survey to other
- System perspective Perform tests on the network
of D5.1
8D5.3 Common Paper on Conceptual Learning
Management(Month 12, Responsibility ..)

approach learning through a pedagogical/conceptual
lense - Starting points

Management. (Month 18, Responsibility ..)
- Organize an Open Call Workshop in context of
Ed-Media 2004 or other conference
11Description of work
- T5.1 Development of an integrated brokerage
environment - T5.2 Analysis of the system interoperability of
the first prototype - T5.3 Analysis of the requirements of brokerage
and learning repositories - T5.4 Open Call Workshop on Knowledge Markets and
Learning Management to form a detailed roadmap of
research needs within the scope of the WP.
12Objectives
- Trial brokerage systems and gather end-user
feedback - Design and test methods for building and
deploying brokerage systems - Integrate brokerage systems (e.g. Ariadne,
Edutella, EducaNext, ) to achieve critical mass
in Europe - Investigate system interoperability issues with
industry participants such as LMS vendors - Investigate concept-based access mechanism to
brokerage systems - Propose improvements for the management of
learning in organizations - Share experiences developed within previous
WP-related projects an integrate them to a
unified view
