S.U.G.S. Strasbourg University Geophysical
Society
Strasbourg University Geophysical Society (SUGS)
is the first SEG student section in France.
Created in September 2002, it is based at School
of Geophysics (within E.O.S.T., University of
Strasbourg) and regroups undergraduates to Ph-D
students. Our aim is the promotion of the
geophysical profession to undergraduate and
graduate students. For this purpose, we organise
conferences on geophysical industrial and
research activities, sites visits and field
measurements We would like to invite company
representatives to come to Strasbourg to share
with our members their experiences in EP and/or
RD. In addition, we would be glad to elaborate
partnerships with student societies from other
universities by organising joint meetings or
geophysical field schools.
Guest lectures Guest lectures allow students to
better understand the needs and the expectations
of the geophysical industry. It is also a good
way to keep abreast of the latest developments in
exploration geophysics. In October 2005, for
the 75th SEG anniversary, we have invited Dr.
Panos Kelamis (Saudi Aramco) to give his lecture
A pragmatic view of land multiple attenuation
technology. This year, we have also invited
representatives of EDG to discuss geophysical
applications in civil engineering, of TOTAL for a
presentation of the company, and of CGG, who have
discussed professional development in their
company.
Site visits In April 2006, we organized for
researchers and SUGS members a visit of the Home
of energy and nuclear plant of Fessenheim
(France). It was focused on the working of the
power plant, uranium extraction and seismic
hazard.
Field measurements Since Mars 2006, We have
worked in association with archaeologists. We
have made geophysical measurements (magnetic,
electro-magnetic and radar) near St Dié in the
Vosges mountains to look for Iron Age
artifacts. We have also worked in the south of
Alsace for the detection of a buried fuel tank.
Projects and Partnerships In next September, we
plan to visit the petroleum museum of
Pechelbronn, and then the mines of Ste
Marie-aux-Mines. We are also continuing field
measurements for the archaeologists team, and
other guest lectures. Special thanks to Total,
Schlumberger and CGG who have contributed to the
participation of 23 SUGS members to Vienna 2006
EAGE Meeting and Exhibition. Thanks also to EAGE
for facilitating our visit.
