Title: Introduction, Habit 1, and Habit 2
1 - Introduction, Habit 1, and Habit 2
- Amber Moore and Jimmy Reilly
2What is a Habit?
- It is the intersection of knowledge, skill, and
desire - Knowledge the what to do
- Skill the how to do
- Desire the motivation or the want to do
- We need ALL 3 to make
- something a habit in our lives
3The 7 Habits
- Stephen Coveys 7 Habits build upon one another
- It isnt a book you should just plow right
through - In fact, he often requires reflection and thought
after each habit - It may also take a couple times to read to
thoroughly understand - Covey suggests we shift our paradigm or
viewpoint to the role of a teacher rather
than a learner
4Old Lady? or Young Lady?
5Old Lady? or Young Lady?
- Stephen Covey actually practiced this exercise in
one of his classes at Harvard Business School - It helps to show us how conditioning affects our
perception or the way we see things - All of the influences in our lives have made an
impact on us and alter our frames of reference - If you tried to see both the Old Woman AND Young
Lady you might have come to realize that we all
see things and interpret things differently
even though we visually received the same image - We tend to see the world not as it is, but as we
were conditioned to see it - Being able to say Aha and see the image from
someone elses viewpoint is known as a
Paradigm Shift - According to Covey, we want to break our old ways
of thinking - This will bring us to a better understanding of
ourselves and the world around us

21The Other End of the Stick
Consequences and Mistakes We are free to choose
our response in any situation, but in doing so,
we choose the attendant consequence. When we
pick up on end of the stick, we pick up the
other.
22Relation to Project Management
- Project managers must plan and actively monitor
that plan - Documents that help project managers to be
proactive - Risk management plan
- Stakeholder analysis
- Lessons Learned
23Habit 2
- Begin with the End in Mind
24What does Begin with the End in Mind mean?
- Use the image of the end of your life as a
frame of reference for which everything else is
measured - Your behaviors can be examined by what really
matters most to you - Helps us figure out
- where we are going in life,
- where we want to end up,
- allows us to understand where we are right now.
- To find our definition of success
- Helps define personal criteria
- Guides our steps in the right direction
25All things are created twice
- There is a 1st mental creation
- Followed by a 2nd physical creation
- Self Awareness
- Allows us to take charge of our 1st creation
- Take charge and write our own script for the 2nd
creation - People use this principle in many different areas
of their lives - Before we plan a vacation
- Before we build a house
- Before we give a speech
26The most effective way to Begin with the End in
Mind
- Create a personal mission statement
- Creed/philosophy addressing
- Who you want to be
- What you want to do
- How you will go about achieving it
- Mission statements are not created overnight
- Require reflection, thought, time
- Personal mission statements should be based on
fundamental truths, embracing important areas in
our lives - We can create personal milestones throughout
our lives to help us measure and plan certain
accomplishments
27Our Centers
- In order to begin writing our personal mission
statement, we should begin at the center of our
Circle of Influence - Our centers deal with our vision and values
- Whatever is at the center will be our sources
for - Security identity/self-esteem
- Guidance source of direction
- Wisdom perspective on life
- Power our ability to make choices and decisions
28Its possible for numerous alternatives centers
to exist in our lives
- Souse Centered
- Family Centered
- Money Centered
- Work Centered
- Possession Centered
- Pleasure Centered
- Friend Centered
- Enemy Centered
- Church Centered
- Self-Centered
Security, guidance, wisdom, and power affect each
of these!
29A Principled-Center
- Looking at the balanced whole
- When problems arise, a principled-centered person
takes all factors into consideration and then
comes up with the best solution
