Title: Life Processes

1
Life Processes
  • Flowers and Plants

2
Structures of Plants
  • Roots anchor the plant and take wat er and
    nutrients from the soil
  • Two kinds
  • Taproot (big thick root)
  • Fibrous Root (many little roots)

3
Structures of plants
  • Stems
  • provide support for the plant
  • Veins
  • bundles of tubes that carry food and water

4
Structures of Plants
  • Leaves
  • Allow movement of water and nutrients through the
    veins.
  • Main food making part of the plant
  • Use energy from the sun to make food from water
    and carbon dioxide
  • Sepal
  • Small leaves that hold up the petals and protect
    the bud

5
Structures of Plants
  • Seed
  • An undeveloped plant
  • Stores food inside
  • Made in flowers

6
Seeds
  • Seeds move in different ways
  • Some plants scatter their own seeds
  • Wind
  • Water
  • Animals
  • Humans

7
Pollination
  • Pollen
  • Male sex cell
  • Produced by the anther

8
Pollination
  • Egg/Ovule
  • Female sex cell
  • Found inside the pistil
  • Becomes a seed when fertilized

9
Pollination
  • Pollination happens when animals, wind or humans
move pollen from one anther to a pistil.

10
Fertilization
  • Fertilization
  • When pollen goes down the pollen tube and sits
on the egg, the egg becomes a seed.
  • The seed becomes a new plant.

11
Seedless Plants
  • Seedless plants reproduce with spores.
  • Spores grow male and female branches and produce
    sex cells.
  • The branches combine and make an egg.
  • The egg grows a thin stalk with a spore case on
    top.
  • The spore case opens and the spores are released
    to make new plants.
  • Moss and Ferns are seedless plants

12
Photosynthesis
  • Water and minerals are carried to the leaves from
    the roots and stem.
  • Carbon Dioxide enters the plant through the
    leaves.
  • The leaves use the light from the sun to produce
    food (sugar).
  • The energy from the sun is absorbed by the
    chlorophyll in the leaves.
  • The food making process releases oxygen into the
    air.
  • The food produced goes to all parts of the plant.
Some food is used and some is stored.

13
Dormancy
  • Seeds that do not germinate are dormant
    (sleeping).
  • They may need more water or warmer weather.
  • Dormancy can help a plant survive cold winters or
    periods without rain.
  • Some plants have to be dormant for a period of
    time to germinate.

14
Were you paying attention?Time for a QUIZ!
15
Quiz!
  • Q What does the stem do?

A Carries food and water to and from the roots
and leaves.
