Context

• Increasing integration of environmental
  stewardship into maintenance and construction
  activities.
• Results of these efforts have not been
  adequately summarized, assessed for wide
  applicability, or disseminated.

Task

• Develop a compendium of stewardship practices in
  DOT construction and maintenance operations that
  will enable transportation agencies to benefit
  from each other's experience, so that they may
  more fully integrate stewardship into all aspects
  of their work in these areas.

What we aim to produce

• Web-based categorization system for in excess of
  a thousand practices in use across the country.
• Links to examples or resources at state DOTs,
  implementation tips, pictures, performance
  measures in use, research results, or agency
  contacts will be included for a subset.

2003 Activities

• Review existing state DOT BMP manuals and/or
  environmental chapters thereof and distill best
  practices.
• Review published literature on transportation and
  utility (linear corridor) maintenance and
  construction practices.
• Review state DOT Env. Mgmt. Systems.
• Develop categorization system.

Developing a Community of Practice

• Dynamically updated on-line information
  sharing/posting system.
• Provisions for conversation and person-to-person
  exchange and learning.
• Review and updating of categories.
• Time and money saved on resources/tools for
  improving environmental performance!

Your input needed!

• Contribute environmental resources your state DOT
  has developed, research you have funded, or other
  resources of which you are aware.
• Review categories and advise on ease of use for
  your staff/your states management context.
• Use/add to information sharing system.
