Dehydration
  • Neonates
  • most at risk
  • Diarrhea

4

6
12-15 Dehydrated
  • Recumbant
  • Unable to rise
  • Death

7
Goal
  • Replace fluid lost
  • Meet maintenance requirements

8
Calculate Dehydration
  • Multiply dehydration by body weight in
    Kilograms
  • 5 x 50 kg 0.05 x 50 kg 2.5 kg
  • 2.5 kg 2.5 Liters
  • This is the fluid deficit

9
Calculate Daily Maintenance
  • 0.06 Liters/kg/day
  • 0.06 x 50 kg 3 liters
  • This is the maintenance requirement

10
Total Requirement
  • Fluid Deficit daily requirement
  • 2.5 liters deficit 3 liter daily requirement
  • 2.5 3 5.5 liters total required over next 24
    hours
  • ASSUMING NO FURTHER LOSS!

11
Body Fluids
  • Blood
  • Lymph
  • Cerebrospinal fluid
  • Synovial fluid
  • Serous fluid

12
Blood
  • Plasma- contains water, proteins, electrolytes,
  • Formed elements
  • RBC
  • WBC
  • Platelets
