The Nature of History A Debate Between Marc
Trachtenberg and James M. Banner, Jr., 1998
  • By Marc Trachtenberg and James M. Banner, Jr

3
Publication Information
  • Marc Trachtenbergs text first appeared as an
article in the Wall Street Journal on July 17,
1998, titled The Past Under Siege
  • James M. Banner, Jrs text is a response to Marc
    Trachtenbergs article.

Marc Trachtenberg Asserts
  • The field of history is becoming more and more
fragmented and focusing on a privileged band of
history. Specifically the study of traditionally
marginalized groups such as women or minorities.
He believes that this sort of privilege will
    marginalize and completely overshadow more
    traditional types of historic study.
  • As a result, Marc has chosen to form a new
organization called The Historical Society. The
organization is made of members who are
dissatisfied with the status quo and want to
break away from existing historical organizations
    to pursue more traditional studies.

5
James M. Banner, Jr. Responds
  • Banner asserts that the assumption that victim
studies are taking over the discipline is
faulty. He cites such organizations as the
Society for Historians of the Early American
Republic as active examples of groups who focus
    on traditional historic issues.
  • Banner believes that the recent popularity of
victim studies has had a positive influence on
Historical study because it has given great
insight into the history of workers, women,
racial and ethnic minorities and other
marginalized groups, as well as the traditional
    elite-white-male history.
  • Banner concludes that the addition of a new
historical society will only lend to the
    fragmentization of the discipline.

Student Response Sonya Walker
  • This article made me consider what kinds of
history are currently popular and allowed me to
review opposing viewpoints regarding what history
studies should be considered important history.
  • Banner sort of attacks Trachtenberg over the name
of the society and the use of the word
manifesto, which makes Banners argument start
out on a trivial note. He also tends to use a lot
of industry-speak, so his response is a little
difficult for the layman to understand. The
article would have benefited from a bit less
    snarkiness.
