• Specific expertise WHO has classified depression
  disturbances - due to widespread existence and
  serious medical consequences and resulting social
  and economic effects - as a priority health
  problem in all the developed countries.
• Project idea/RationaleThe aim of our project is
  to build a European network, which will integrate
  the research capabilities of a group of research
  institutes and university departments to provide
  an infrastructure for the highest quality
  research in psychiatric disorders, particularly
  in depression disturbances. This network will
  integrate our original computer expert advisory
  systems called Salomon with modern brain
  imaging techniques and neurophysiological methods.

• Potential impact
• the creation of a computer advisory system based
  on fuzzy logic mathematical model for the early
  detection of affective disturbances available to
  the patients and their relatives through the
  internet enabling anonymous, convenient and
  free of charge access
• the introduction of a system monitoring effects
  of therapy in European standard according to
  effectiveness coefficients defined by a new
  mathematical model and data base
• to assess neural correlates of emotional brain
  in depression using fMRI, EEG, and evoked
  potentials

• the broadening of therapeutical methods in
  affective disturbances with the use of
  behavioral-cognitive psychotherapy together with
  neurophysiology (EEG-biofeedback,
  EEG-brainmapping, ERPS)
• development of an effective data storage system
  regarding the patient and allowing multilingual
  use.
• Together the members of this network will
  comprise an unmatched critical mass of human and
  other resources aimed at fundamental and applied
  research into a group of disorders, which impose
  a huge burden on Europes social and material
  capital. The relationships and mutual
  responsibilities between neuroscience and the
  society it serves will be addressed specifically.
  The work carried out under this collaboration
  will go towards to publications which will be
  submitted to peer-review journals. Presentation
  of the results at international conferences is
  also planned such as the World Congress of
  Biological Psychiatry and local research meetings
  and seminars.

  (neuroimaging and emotion unit) Prof. Tony David
  (neuropsychiatry unit) from the Institute of
  Psychiatry, London, UK
