• Problem 1 Review the proof of the Appendix of
  the paper M. Nazarathy and E. Simony Phase
  wander statistics over the fiber-optic channel
  applied to optimal detection of polarization
  shift-keying modulation, in which appendix we
  have rigorously proven that the phase, wrapped
  around modulo 2Pi, is isotropic (uniform over
  0,2Pi. Along similar lines investigate the
  mutual independence of phase factors of the form
• or if you wish of the wrapped around modulo 2Pi
  phase,
• where L has some arbitrary distribution.
  Investigate the conditions on the betas and the
  distribution of L, formulating conditions similar
  to those of the paper
• Problem 2 Fix the problem with the
  spontaneous-spontaneous term in the derivation of
  the optical amplifier in lecture 6, assuming
  that the ASE noise field is gaussian. Derive the
  formula for the spontaneous-spontaneous noise
  power as presented there (but proven incorrectly
  by pretending that the spontaneous noise is
  independent of itself).
