Title: Journal

1
Journal
  • You walk into an arcade and find a monkey lying
on the floor. Next to his body, you see a ball of
yarn, a light saber and a skateboard. Inspecting
further you see a peculiar blue substance on the
    bottoms of the monkeys feet.
  • In your journal, describe what happened to the
monkey before you arrived to the scene.
  • Use at least three sensory details.

2
Using descriptive detail
  • There are three keys to using sensory words
    successfully.

3
1. Balance
  • If you use too many sensory words, your writing
becomes clogged, too busy and difficult to read.
If you dont use enough, your writing may lack
the details and specific words that create
    interest for the reader.

4
Example
  • Too little The girl walked into the store in the
    big city.
  • Too much The girl with sapphire eyes and
cinnamon hair darted to the charming antique
store in the awesome and energetic metropolis.
  • Just right The girl tucked her brown hair into a
hat and skipped to the small antique store in the
    bustling city.

5
2. Understanding
  • Be sure you know the definition of the words so
youre saying what you want to say.
  • Did you hear the sinister laughter?
  • Did you hear the jocular laughter?
  • Which one means creepy laughter?
  • Sinister means creepy or disturbing.
  • USE Shift F7 (Thesaurus), but use it with caution
    ? ? ?
  • How do you use Shift F7? Lets take a look!!

6
3. Be deliberate
  • Make choices about when and where to use sensory
    words.
  • Throwing them in here and there (without thought)
    does not usually work well.
  • Remember, not every sentence needs to have
sensory words. Place them where they make sense
    and add to the story.

7
Lets practice!
  • Take out your vocab packet.
  • With a partner, choose ten vocab words.
  • Create 10 new, original sentences with the vocab
words, and incorporate at least one sensory
    detail per sentence.
  • Be sure we know the meaning of the word by the
way its used in the sentence.
  • Underline the vocab word, and the sensory detail.
  • You can be silly, but be sure the vocab word is
    used correctly.
