2Community programs to show their commitment to
the environment
- Various programs have been established over the
years to make visible to the public the Smelters
commitment to the environment. Some of the
programs were set up by the Smelter to engage the
community in Alcoa events, such as the Alcoa
Frogwatch Program. Other efforts involve Smelter
staff or sponsorship in response to community
concern or partaking in national environmental
events.

4Environmental Education Resource Kit (EERK)
A Resource Kit was developed by a group of local
organisations to assist with including
environmental education in school curriculum. The
kit contains units with classroom based
activities, as well as outdoor activities and
fieldtrips. BELOW EERK Development Team RIGHT

5Coastal Heathland and Coastal Wattle
- Community concern was raised about the Coastal
Wattle (Acacia sophorae) overrunning coastal
heathland communities around Portland, and
resulting in the loss of other species in these
areas. The Coastal Wattle was also beginning to
increase in the remnant heathland within and
around the Smelter Parkland. PA were part of a
committee along with members of the Department of
Conservation and Environment, City of Portland,
Australian Conservation Foundation and the
Portland Field Naturalists, who investigated
factors influencing the rapid spread of the
wattle. Trial plots were set up on PA grounds and
research conducted to help understand how to
control and reduce the wattles numbers.
6Landcare sponsorship
- PA sponsors Landcare programs in the area.
Through these programs PA supports landowners in
re-establishing vegetation (Hill, 1999). Greening
Australia assisted PA in establishing a regional
seed back in Portland where local seed can be
stored, purchased and exchanged by the public. An
information service is available to landowners
and school children with information about native
plants, soil types, land management problems and
revegetation techniques.
This is a direct seeding machine sponsored by PA
and made available to local Landcare groups.
