• Web Based System
• Billions of dollars have exchanged hands through
  the use of Ebays web server which hosts all of
  the online auction information
• Client to Client TPS
• Ebay connects customers from all around the world
  to buy and sell good
• Java based program

• Developed in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar
• 1996 Jeff Skoll became first President
• 1998 Margaret Whitman became CEO

Current System

• The current system has over 181 million global
  customers
• At any given time there are 78 million auctions
  going
• Over 724,000 professional sellers use Ebay as a
  primary or secondary source of income in the U.S.

Issues Posed

• In 1999 the system had several interruptions, one
  even lasting 22 hours
• During the 22 hour interruption, the employees
  took time to call important clients to assure
  them of the reliability
• This type of service is what has made Ebay a
  household name after over a decade of development

Ethical Issues

• Ebay Customers have tried to sell everything in
  the online market place
• Ebay does not allow the sale of
• Tobacco, Drugs, Alcohol
• Firearms, ammunition
• Human parts or remains
• Illegal items

Fair Trading Policies

• Ebay does lack reliability in the fact that
  sellers can not deal with one another or see the
  item. Pierre added features into the system to
  help ebay users
