  • The Great Lakes are the largest body of fresh
    water in the world
  • The area known as the Great Lakes states were
    difficult to get to because of the Appalachian
    Mountains therefore, very few Americans settled
    in this area
  • The Great Lakes area was inhabited by Indians
    including the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Miami tribes.
  • To entice settlers to move to this area, congress
    sold land for 1 per acre for up to 640 acres per
    person

The Erie Canal was opened in 1825 The Erie Canal
allowed produce grown in the Great Lakes States
to be shipped to the major population centers in
the Northeast Due to the creation of a navigable
waterway, major trading centers developed along
the Great Lakes including Cleveland, Detroit, and
Chicago Since farmers could now get their produce
to the major markets in the Northeast and since
the soil in this area was very rich, The Great
Lakes states produced enough food to supply the
urban centers of the United States The area
between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River is
called the Corn Belt.
